SECP1513 Technology and Information System

Lecturer Names: Dr. Nor Shahida Binti Hasan, Dr. Halinawati Binti Hirol

Introduction

As a primer subject, this course will introduce students to information systems and technology (IS/IT), as well as its uses in daily life both at home and at work. Various aspects of IS/IT encompassing hardware, software, network, communications, internet, multimedia, graphics and systems applications will be introduced. Students will be equipped with basic skills in handling PC installation and productivity tools via practical work in the labs, which shall comprise a major part of the study. At the end of the course, student should be able to distinguish basic IS/IT component and applications.

Reflection

Below, I reflected upon each of the projects in TIS, giving a more detailed reflection and then I finally gave my first impressions and what I learned in this course.

Our Design Thinking Video

Design Thinking Project

This project has taught us teamwork, collaboration, and it has taught us how we can think of a suitable solution to a problem effectively. We learned that the five stages to think of a solution are Empathy, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test. In the empathy stage, we immerse ourselves to the user's problem. In the Define stage, we list down the reasons of the problems and how they came to be. In the Ideate  stage, my group shared their ideas based on the problems and chose the best one. In the Prototype stage, we designed our prototype whereas in testing stage, we tested our protoype to see if it actually solved the problems.

Basic PC Assembly Assignment

As future software engineers, this was a very cruicial assignment for us as we learned about the hardwares for computers since our degree is mostly focused on the software part. In the first task, we learned about the basic tools to assemble a PC, in the second task, we made a rough sketch of motherboards and in the final task, we made a step by step PC assembly where we learned how to install/remove different hardwares.

Group Poster Assignment

In this assignment, we reflect mainly upon fourth Industrial Revolution and all the previous Industrial Revolutions. I feel like as Software Engineers, this is particularly important as we got to understand the potential of technology, how it shaped people's lives for the better and it's flaws.

Assignment Talk 3

In this assigment, we reflect upon three of the succcessful alumnis of UTM. We learn about how they found success in their life and how we can be successful just like them. We also got to know of what employers usually look for in their employees, and this is important for any student.

Industrial Talk 2

In this assignment, we learn about how we can use our time efficiently to have projects completed on time. Here, project Management gets stressed upon. Project management is used in all companies to deliver key capabilities to assist operational goals. So this is very important for our working life as well as our university life to have projects delivered on time.

Industrial Talk 3(Cloud Computing)

Here, we learn of the most prominent Cloud Computing Service Provders: Amazon, EC2, Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure. We learn of their strengths and weaknesses and what makes them stand out. As software engineers, having knowledge of these is very important.

My first impression and what I learned in this course...

At first, I thought this course would teach us coding so I was very excited. However later, I found out it was just a demanding course aimed to introduce students to the world of IT. It aimed to give students a glimpse of topics that are to be taught in the upcoming semesters. Areas such as Database are very crucial for software engineers and is to be covered in detail in the upcoming semesters so this course just introduced us to areas such as those and taught us what to expect and how to prepare ourseleves.

Most importantly, I learned teamwork and collaboration as we frequently worked on group assignments which helped me understand my group mates better. As software engineers often work in groups in their working life, I thought this was important.
