Statistics Probability and Data Analysis

Reflection on Project 1

In earlier second semester, we were assigned our first project for this course. The project that we did was about descriptive statistics. In this project, we had to collect primary data on our own that is suitable for descriptive statistics and we used the survey method.

The topic that we chose for this project is the usage of social media among the undergraduate students. Social media is one of the most popular platforms to be used in the society especially among us, the youngsters. Personally for me, I've never been through a day without scrolling through my feed. Therefore, we were curious to find out what undergraduates use social media for and the time spent. The data for this study was collected by using Google form. We shared the form to multiple Whatsapp groups in seven days. After the data was collected, we did the suitable descriptive statistics for each question.

We faced many problems while finishing this assignment since it is our first time doing this kind of project. The first problem that we faced was to get a good number of respondents to answer our survey. Since all sections of this course were doing the same project at the same time, our survey got overlooked in the Whatsapp groups. After about three days, we only got around 30 respondents. At that point, we realized out mistake. We only shared our survey to the school related groups. Therefore, our survey got overlooked and maybe people forgot if they've already filled them in. To solve this problem, I messaged some of my friends from another faculty personally to ask them to share the survey. The groupmates did the same thing where they asked their friends from another faculty to share the survey. In seven days, we managed to get a total of 130 respondents.

The second problem that we faced was during the data analysing. We made a mistake by not setting one of the questions in the survey a compulsory to answer. Some of the respondents skipped that question that results in messed up data. All questions have 130 respondents except for that one particular question. To solve the problem, we had to search for the respondent who skipped that question one by one in excel. It was a bit of a hassle but we had to do in order to get a good data to analyse.

The third problem that we faced was in the making of the presentation video. By The time we planned to make the video, it was already the first phase of MCO. Some groupmates already went back home so we didn’t have the opportunity to meet up to do the video together. However, we managed to divide the presentation parts that we have to do on our own.

Throughout this project, I learned how important it is to have friends and connection with other people. This kind of project will be hard to do if we don't have any connections with other people since we rely on them to give the information that we need. Connection with other people is very important in the future. What if some day, we will be given a job to do that requires help from other people? For example, business marketing.

Secondly, I learned how important it is to double check every single thing that we do. It is definitely better to double check your work rather than having to fix the consequences. It’s like doing the exam, it is important to check your answer multiple of times so that you can fix the careless mistakes.

Thirdly, I learned how important it is to manage time smartly. In the future, I definitely will fill my schedule with the assignments and projects that need to be done. This is because we don’t know what will happen in the future. If we only did the video the week before MCO when we had the free time, we wouldn’t be facing that problem.

After the project, we were given insights on how the undergraduate students live their life in terms of social media. No matter how busy the undergraduates are, they always find the time to use social media because social media is like the source of everything. It is a source of entertainment, source of knowledge and source of income.
