Mini Report

During the "Virtual Talk Fire Drill" session, presented by Mr. Mohammad Firdaus bin Wahyudin, Assistant Safety Officer (KP32), I had the opportunity to participate and listen to his insightful presentation. Mr. Firdaus shared an incident that took place a few weeks ago in one of the Tun Razak College building, where a fire broke out in one of the rooms. The incident resulted in the occupants of the building being exposed to thick smoke, putting their lives in danger. Thankfully, with the assistance of colleagues from the same wing that have knowledge regarding fire drill, all of the occupants were successfully rescued from the affected room.

The virtual talk aimed to emphasize the importance of fire drills and emergency preparedness. Firstly, it highlighted that conducting building evacuations is a legal requirement under the Fire Services Act. Secondly, the talk aimed to train participants, including myself, on how to remain calm during emergencies and evacuate safely to designated assembly points. Lastly, it aimed to raise awareness among staff, including me, about the significance of acquiring knowledge in safety skills, particularly in emergency situations. In preparation for the fire drill, various steps were taken. These included compiling a list of building occupants, creating detailed building floor plans, and ensuring the availability of essential fire prevention equipment.

Mr. Firdaus guided us through the process of evacuating a building during a fire emergency. This involved triggering the emergency alarm, evacuating occupants from the building premises, directing them towards designated emergency routes, guiding them to assembly areas, organizing lines according to their block and Wing, and accurately counting the number of evacuated individuals to make sure everyone successfully gathered at the area..

He emphasized the crucial role of the floor leader during such situations. Responsibilities included ensuring the closure of fire barrier doors, directing colleagues exit promptly upon hearing the emergency alarm, being the last person to leave the floor, contacting the incident commander, determining the attendance at assembly points, possessing a flashlight and whistle, being knowledgeable about fire extinguisher usage, and being ready to receive instructions.Throughout the virtual talk, I also learned proper fire extinguishing techniques and actively participated in the engaging question-and-answer session with Mr. Firdaus.

As a participant in this "Virtual Talk Fire Drill," I gained a comprehensive understanding of safety protocols during fire emergencies. The session equipped me with valuable skills such as remaining calm, following evacuation procedures, and effectively utilizing fire safety equipment. Moreover, the drill fostered essential attributes such as teamwork, communication, and the ability to act swiftly in stressful situations.Participating in this virtual talk aligned with the desired graduate attributes and skills, including adaptability, critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration. The knowledge and skills gained from this session will undoubtedly contribute to my ability to handle emergencies and actively contribute to maintaining a safe working environment.

Self Reflection

Participating in the "Virtual Talk Fire Drill" and listening attentively to Mr. Mohammad Firdaus bin Wahyudin's presentation has been an invaluable experience that has allowed me to reflect on my personal growth and the development of important graduate attributes. This self-reflection highlights the key attributes that I have been focused on through this session.

One of the notable attributes that I have strengthened is adaptability. The incident shared by Mr. Firdaus, where building occupants faced a fire emergency, emphasized the importance of being flexible and quick to adjust in unpredictable situations. This knowledge has taught me the value of staying calm and composed, even amidst chaos, enabling me to adapt to new circumstances and make rational decisions effectively.

Critical thinking is another attribute that I have honed throughout this virtual talk. Understanding the process of evacuating a building during a fire emergency has required me to analyze information, assess risks, and make informed decisions. This skill has empowered me to evaluate the most efficient evacuation routes, identify potential hazards, and take appropriate actions, enhancing my ability to think critically in high-pressure situations.

Problem-solving has been a key focus during the virtual talk, and it has further developed my problem-solving skills. Learning about the role of a floor leader and their responsibilities in ensuring the safety of building occupants has highlighted the need for innovative solutions. The session has encouraged me to approach challenges with a proactive mindset, seeking creative ways to address safety issues and contribute to effective emergency response plans.

Collaboration is an essential attribute that I have actively exercised throughout the virtual talk. The emphasis on teamwork in rescuing the occupants from the affected room showcased the significance of working together towards a common goal. This experience has reinforced my ability to communicate effectively, cooperate with others, and recognize the value of collective efforts in achieving successful outcomes.

Engaging in the question-and-answer session has encouraged my curiosity and fostered a continuous desire for learning. This attribute aligns with the graduate attribute of lifelong learning, as it has motivated me to seek further knowledge and understanding about fire safety measures, emergency protocols, and relevant safety equipment. By actively participating and seeking clarification, I have demonstrated my commitment to personal growth and continuous improvement.

In conclusion, the "Virtual Talk Fire Drill" has not only provided me with valuable knowledge and skills related to fire safety and emergency preparedness but has also enhanced important graduate attributes. My adaptability, critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and commitment to lifelong learning have all been strengthened through this session. I am grateful for the opportunity to participate and will strive to apply these attributes in my personal and professional life, contributing to a safer environment for myself and others.
