Internship (WEEK 2)

Day 6 - 2/7/2018

Time : 0800-1800

Venue : NSF Engineering Sdn Bhd (HQ), Pasir Gudang

Activities :

  1. List and tag all the equipments in the lab store
  • I was asked to list and tag all the equipments so that it is easier to find and use the equipments.
  • The tag including name and the serial number of the equipments.

  1. Calibration of pressure gauge using dead-weight tester
  • Dead-weight tester is an apparatus which include a pressure balance piston-cylinder assembly, masses, and a base assembly.

Operations instructions of dead-weight tester:

  • For applied pressure from 0 bar up to 140 bar (approximately 2000 psi), close valve B where valve A remaining open.

  • Load the weight carrier (conversation weight) onto PCA with the weights equivalent to the desired pressure test point. Each weight is identified by marked with two pressures, one for the low pressure range and another one for high pressure range. The equivalent weight of the carrier must be taken into account with another combination weight loaded at desired pressure point.

  • For other pressure units, a make-up weight is added to the carrier for conversation to 1 bar.

  • Wind the screw pump handle to clockwise. This will generate pressure up to the required pressure point. When handle (screw pump) becomes stiff to rotate, this will indicate the pressure limit for this range has been reached.

  • The piston rises (mid-float) with the blue band marked which corresponds to the low pressure range. The band is easily visible from a seated position of the operator.

  • Before taking the readings, ensure weights and piston is rotated by hand approximately (30 rpm) and the piston position as at band marked (blue color). This is to ensure accurate reading will be given by the Dead-weight Tester.
  • From this activity, even though the calibration procedure is laborious but the results are more accurate than gauge comparator. Eg: Pressure gauge

Day 7 - 3/7/2018

Time : 0800-1800

Venue : Dyson Malaysia Development Centre, Senai

Activities :

  1. Data logger calibration on site at Dyson
  • Data logger: to measure output temperature display at data logger of each port/channel.
  • Using type K and Type T thermocouple, the data display is compared with multi product calibrator.
  • Any port/channel that malfunction need to be repair.

Day 8 - 4/7/2018

Time : 0800-1800

Venue : Calibration Laboratory, NSF Engineering Sdn Bhd (HQ), Pasir Gudang.

Activities :

  1. Calibration of Temperature Calibrator
  • Temperature calibrator consists of 2 types of measurements method. Thermocouple and resistive temperature detector (RTD).
  • Before calibration, it is important to do verification to ensure that the standards are in good condition.

  1. Calibration procedure for Thermocouple Measuring Device
  • Connect a length of “input type’ thermocouple to the input terminal, connect the thermocouple wires to the calibrator according to symbol (+,-).Turn on calibrator

ACJC, place the reference ACJC to the connection between thermocouple wire and

calibrator, allow sufficient time for ACJC ambient stabilize, simulate the require type

of EMF from the lowest to the highest test point, observed and record when reading

stabilize.

  1. Calibration procedure for Resistance Temperature Device
  • From calibrator connect 2 wires according to symbols (+,-) to the test terminal of

indicator. Wires shall be in same material, diameter, length and low electric

resistance, simulate the required resistance value of °C to the test indicator from the

lowest to the highest test point, observed and record when reading stabilize.

Day 9 - 5/7/2018

Time : 0800-2130

Venue : Calibration Laboratory, NSF Engineering Sdn Bhd (HQ), Pasir Gudang.

Activities :

  1. Calibration of pressure recorder and pressure gauge (EFTECH)
  2. Pressure Recorder
  • I was assigned to calibrate Pressure recorder (EFTECH) total of 16 units.
  • Pressure recorder is an electromechanical device that records mechanical input using different colour pens onto a circular charts.
  • The accuracy class will cover 10% to 100% of the range. The test method maybe either by comparing selected indication with the pressure to be applied at these points or by comparing selected pressure with resultant indications of the unit under test(UUT). The test shall be made with increasing and decreasing pressure.

  1. Pressure Gauge
  • I was assigned to calibrate Pressure gauge (EFTECH) total of 20 units
  • Exercise gauge slowly, 3 times from minimum to maximum and minimum of the scale.
  • For gauges with a pointer stop, the accuracy class will cover 10% to 100% of the range. For gauges with a free zero, the accuracy class will cover 0% to 100% of the range and zero shall be used as an accuracy check point.
  • The test method maybe either by comparing selected indication with the pressure to be applied at these points or by comparing selected pressure with resultant indications of the unit under test(UUT). The test shall be made with increasing and decreasing pressure.
  • Test with minimum of 5 points of evenly distributed over the entire scale.

Day 10 - 6/7/2018

Time : 0800-1800

Venue : Calibration Laboratory, NSF Engineering Sdn Bhd (HQ), Pasir Gudang.

Activities :

  1. Learn to key in calibration data
  • All the calibration results need to be transfer into excel to be recorded and document for future reference to the customer.
  • From this task, I can enhance my excel skills.
