Industry Visit : OneMaker
INTRODUCTION
On Saturday, 24 of November 2018, students were invited to attend the workshop in OneMaker Medini City. OneMaker Group Pte Ltd (OMG) is one of the leading Maker-centric service provider in the region and their main job is to solve around Maker education, digital prototyping services and corporate professional development.
In the first seminar, there are 2 activities which are the Virtual Reality Talk & building a robot who could compete with other robots in a battlefield. Virtual Reality Speech explained the students about the significance of virtual reality technology in our daily life. For Robot Making, it needed the students to make a small robot by using items given by the organizer. For example, stick, plastic water bottle, cardboard and battery. These workshops encourage students to learn more about the technology and machine and how one can make the small robot.
First Workshop
In workshop 1, there were two activities, the Virtual Reality presentation & Robot Building. The Virtual Reality speech explained the students concerning the virtual reality technology in our everyday life. Virtual reality is primarily a term used to define a three-dimensional computer-generated environment which can be tried and communicated with a user. Speaker also talk about the different type of virtual technologies such as mixed reality, telepresence, immersive system.
Immersive system
Normally implemented with Head-mounted Display (HDM) to fully fascinate the user view inside the virtual world.
Telepresence
Links remote sensors in the real world with the senses of the human operator.
Mixed reality
Integrate the computer-generated virtual object into the real world which becomes in a sense an equivalent part of our physical environment.
For Robot Making, it needed the students to
create a small robot by using things given by the organizer. For example stick, plastic bottle, cardboard and battery. The students were given time to design their own robot. The robot designed by the students will battle in the Sumo Robot Competition after that.
There are five booth that OneMaker presented to students. All the booth shows the student about the advance technology. But, before everyone goes to every single booth, Students attend a presentation, that explained us about how to develop the technology and machine. And how will the technology and machine will be more advanced further in the future. Below is the list of the machine from generation to generation:
- First: Steam
- Second: Electricity
- Third: Computer
- Present: Artificial Intelligence, IoT, Big Data
Second Workshop
FIRST BOOTH
The first booth that students visit is the Artificial Intelligence booth. Organizers explain us about the statue robot like a wooden headframe, which is attached to a simple computer in it and it's installed using raspberry pi, which can run Google Assistance. It uses a voice sensor. So, you only require to talk to the statue whatever you want. You can ask the Google assistance any questions and it will reply to you accordingly.
SECOND BOOTH
Code with colours is the second booth that students visit. They provided us a blank sheet and so different colour marker and a tiny robot that can sense the colour will walk on the blank paper showing the colour on it's top. The colour pattern will determine what will the robot do. And they give us the mini book that has all the colour patterns which needs to be followed in order to make the tiny robot work.
THIRD BOOTH
Students fly a drone at the third booth. Students controlled a drone at the third booth. The drone was wifi-enabled which only requires a program to operate it. You can program the drone movement as students like by simply using the given patterns.
FOURTH BOOTH
On students fourth booth they explained us that how a 3D model is designed on a special software which can be later printed on 3D printer. They demonstrated us that how the software can be used and asked us to design the logo in 3D.
FIFTH BOOTH
The last and final booth was about the 3D printer in which students can print 3D stuff just through a software. Students able to print anything in 3D with the material specially used in 3D printers like plastic and rubber. The organizers printed some of our names to demonstrate the function of 3D Printers.
REFLECTION
INSIGHT
There are a lot of reflection that we found throughout this whole industrial talk :
From this visit, I think what kind of problem I want to solve in future. I might want to create some innovative thing that can help people around Besides that, I should explore more about the new technology in the world. I should keep advancing because just learning the knowledge from book is not enough.
