UHMT - 1012(Mid Semester Reflection)
During my time here in University Technology Malaysia, I have learned a lot of things that can help me to pursue my dream job in the future. It consists of the knowledge I gain here as well as the experience with regard to engage with other students. Here is my reflection on what I have learned during the past half of the semester. First and for most, I have learned to organize my time well. I was bad at finishing time my task during my foundation year. This is because during my time there, I was so busy with the never-ending class. Sometimes my class finish at 6pm and still got replacement class during night time. I was never got a chance to do my leisure activities and my assignment. That’s why sometimes I late submitted my assignment. But in UTM, it was so different. I manage organize my schedule to plan on what I want to do. I created a daily, weekly and monthly schedule to help me prioritize the important task first. My daily schedule consists of something that I want to accomplish that day such as reading a book and do some light exercise. My weekly schedule consists of things that I want to finish in that particular week such as assignments and revision. My monthly schedule is for the long-term goal such as master the subtopic of the subject or improve my communication skills.
All these schedules come with certain goal. This goal is something I that I will get whenever I complete the schedule. Sometime, when I failed to achieve that goal, I tried to reflect myself on what are the things that going off? As soon as analyse my mistake, I will write it down on somewhere so that I remember not to repeat it in the future. Apart from that, I also have to adapt with the early morning schedule as most of my class start at 8am. I got to discipline myself to go to bed early and wake up early so I can create a proactive mind and always ready to learn a new thing on that day. This is important as people with reactive mindset do not learn things well in class compare to proactive people as they were not ready to learn. The gap between class will be utilize well to complete things I already plan in my personal schedule. This is how I manage my time here in UTM and I believe this will help me in the future when I already enrol for work. This is because all company will want to make sure all the task given were finish within the due date so that they can focus on other thing.
Other than that, I have learned to sharpen my social skills. This is because I got a few friends from high school that have been selected to pursue their degree here. It forces me to make a new friend and in the process of doing that I learned how to initiate the conversation and keeping it going on. I was known as shy and quiet person as I don’t like to make new friend. I prefer to keep my circle small. But I learned that sometimes, you have to throw that mindset in order for you to go further in life as the say goes “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go further, go together”. I also got an opportunity to meet an international friend from various countries such as Indonesia, Bangladesh, Egypt and many more. I got to learn their culture, what is their traditional cloth or what is their traditional food and so on. This due to lecture session during Graduate Success Attributes where we are separated evenly and diversely so that in one group will have a least one local, one international, one Chinese and one Indian. We also shared experience with each other, so that we can know what is our behaviour much better. We also can learn from each other past mistake and maybe doing so, I can prevent myself doing something that will have a bad consequence in the future. Friends with the international friend also can help us to be open minded as we can trade idea with each other. During my assignment for Technology Information System, I got to work with two international friends. We discuss with each other on what is the problem of our assignment and work together to build the solution for that problem. Although we don’t have the flexibility to meet up together, we still discussing in WhatsApp about our assignment.
Now there’s a lot of other way you can make a friend apart from assignment group. I can ask how he/she doing in here? Maybe they need some help from us. Maybe they don’t have enough money to survive for that month. We can donate or give our extra money to them so that they can survive for another month. This way not only we improve our relationship but it may lead to serious friendship and we don’t know that maybe one day he/she can help us back in other form like saving us from accident or by carpooling you to home. This is important to practice as in the future we will work with a lot of other people with different background and races. Practicing how to make friends today will help you to unconsciously make friends in the future. So, you only need to focus on the task given. Not only that, I also can improve my leadership skill as handling a group is not easy. It needs perseverance and patience to make all the group member work together as a team. You have to influence them to follow you as well as motivate them whenever they feel down.
Thirdly, I would like to express I very grateful to be selected here because I learned a lot of new thing in here especially in my chosen field which is software engineering. Here I learned a new programming language which is C++ language which I find kind hard since during my foundation year I learned another language. Although the logic is almost the same, the syntax is quite different and sometime the way we write the code also different. I know I have to adapt with it since C++ are more demanding language compare to C. C++ is object-oriented programming and considered to be the fundamental of any software production especially in gaming. Since I like to play game, I think it’s better for me to master this language because I might create my game one day in the future as it is one of my goal in life. I want to create a game where it can be a platform to generate money. There a lot of game that are well succeed that I inspire from such as DOTA2 Mobile Legend. They have been managed a tournament that have a prize pool up to 18 million-dollar USD.
Moreover, I also learn the basic thing on how digital system work. Digital Logic subject has taught me how the analog system be converted to digital system, how to implement the wiring the logic gate and so on. At one time, when is been asked to do lab session, I got a chance to use ETS-5000 which I find kind of interesting because I once saw a movie about Bill Gates and I saw how he use the machine almost like that to build his operating system which is known as Windows. I got inspire from that and promise myself that I will learn hard and smart so I can be succeeded just like him. I also learn discrete structure which is a subject that improve my logic skill in mathematical ways. It describes how logic can be express in mathematics and as far I have learned one of the hardest parts is the “recursive” part where I have to write multiple equation to solve the problem. Since it is one the mathematic subject, it needs practice in order to understand the topic. This subject also helps me to write a program because sometimes they program need mathematical expression in order to run the program. I believe that all this subject can help me to achieve my dream career in the future. I just need to bear with it and try to understand the concept instead of memorizing it. A lot of company wants a skilful programmer that is hardworking and eager to solve problems. With determination and passion, I believe one day I will become a successful programmer and help contribute something to the community.
Other than education part, I also join some activities that being held in this university. One of the activities I already joined was OPERA 19 which was organized by KDTI committee. The intention I joined this program is to get experience as well as increase my networking with other people. I being placed as secretariat for the badminton tournament but at the last moment I being transfer to another department which is basketball. I was very disappointment as I never handle a basketball tournament before. I got a bit pressure and nervous since I have to learn the rules in a short time. But I embrace myself and took the opportunity to learn new thing because that the only way we can improve our self. The result? Was astonishing as it is not that hard actually, I doesn’t feel pressure at all instead I enjoyed the game and watch all the pro player from UTM compete with each other. At one time, I being in charge to handle a match between a local student and international student. To be honest, I think it is not a match at all as international student has advantage in term of physical body compare to local student but the result tells otherwise. The local manage to beat them up and win the tournament. For me, I leaned that with believe and desire, we can get what we want as long as we try.
I also join some of the newer club in UTM which is ESport club. I was lucky enough to be selected to be the committee of Management in Game for that club. Before I being selected, I have to go through several process and one the it is interview. I used all the knowledge that has been taught during GSA lecture and apply it for this interview. I want to thanks my lecturer Dr Hadi for teaching me valuable lesson. I enjoyed being the committee in this club. I already attend the first meeting which I think quite fun and the best part is it mimic the working meeting. I know it because in the past I used to work as a part time and manage to be a team leader for my department in JURASSICA which is located in The Gardens Mall. I learned from the chairman how to organize the meeting and I'm planning in the future to handle a meeting when I organize an event.
To conclude, I would like to thanks UTM for providing me a great education as well as nice working facilities that I can use to advance myself in the future. I know I have to work harder in order for me to succeed especially in my course in the future. Surely all the knowledge I've have gain in this semester will be remember and being apply in the next semester as I believe it will be harder than this semester. I would take all the extra work to needed in order for me to score for the next semester and be the best student. After all, I think without passion, you can’t achieve your dream. This is because in the process of achieving our dream, we would face certain challenge and problem that will act as a barricade that block our way to achieve our dream. Without a burning desire within us, we would give up halfway and that why it is important to set our mind clearly on what we want to be as we don’t want to have a hard time later on.
Reflection on what i've have learned on 24 September 2019
Today I saw a video shown by the lecturer regarding the interview session between candidates and interviewer. I do learn some lesson from the video and one of the lessons are you have to be yourself. It doesn’t matter whether it is your decision, your way of dress or your crazy idea. You just have to be confidence with yourself. Other than that, I learnt that you have to understand properly to the instruction or the thing that people trying to talk to. This is because we usually tend to do something first before we think and sometimes it can have an aftermath. For example, in the video the interviewer tells all candidates to write ‘something’ on the board. Most of the candidates write about their skills and so on and only one candidate succeeds to write ‘something’ on the board which is the last one and manage to catch interviewer attention. This tell us that the last candidate understands the instruction given by the interviewer.
The second lesson I learn today is you got to have some attributes in order for you to increase your percentage to be employ in the future. There’s a lots attributes have been shown on the screen such as the communication skills, thinking skills and all the way to entrepreneurship skill. You see, you need to secure a job that will give you enough salary so that you will survive especially if the economy not doing well and you have to take note that is not only you want to get a job, other peoples want it too. That’s why it is important for you to equip yourself with these attributes apart from knowledge so that you will stand out from the rest.
Lastly, I learn that different people have different ways to interpret the message. When the lecturer asked the class which one is the centre of attributes, I see lots of answer and explanation from other students regarding their choice. This means it’s totally depends on a person to define the meaning for themselves. But for me, I think global citizen will be the centre of attributes. When you have the attitudes and social skills, you can make a friend and it could be from foreign country. From there, you will learn their culture and the way their communicate with each other. When the understanding established, you then work together as a unit. That’s where thinking skills come as you discuss with each other generating a new idea and who might know, maybe your idea can invent something that demand from the society. From there, you can start a business and sharpen your entrepreneurship skills.
