Group Project on Survey the Class Attendance Behavior in Professional Engineering Practice Course

In this group project consist three members whom are Ng Guo Xuan, Low Zi han and lastly me myself, Muhammad azfar. The purpose we conducted this survey was for studying Class Attendance Behavior in Professional Engineering Practice Course.

This is because, Undergraduates arriving late to lectures or playing truant has been a common issue in many universities. The quality of learning and delivering lecturers may be affected due to the late-comers. In this study, we investigate and explain the attendance behavior of undergraduates for Professional Engineering Practice course in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Methods such as interviewing and observing the attendance behavior of undergraduates were carried out. Moreover, the attendance list in 11 sections for Professional Engineering Practice course were collected, reviewed and analysed. Based on the data collected, it shows that the class attendance for certain sections decreased throughout the end of the semester. The results suggested that factors such as completing other course work or assignment, activities before sleeping at night and the wake up time in the morning, effect of weather, the learning process was not interesting, and the practicality of the course greatly affect the attendance behavior of undergraduates in Professional Engineering Practice course. Finally, we have attempted to conclude that the punctuality of undergraduates for Professional Engineering Practice course can be improved by extrinsic rewards, changing the methods of delivering the lectures, and instills the importance of punctuality by providing undergraduates example on the consequences of arriving late.

During this project, we use 2 kind of approach which were Interview/survey form and collecting data from Attendance Sign-in sheet.

Figure below is the preview about the results of this study.

As a conclusion, Based on the fisrt figure, the most factor (100%) that influenced student did not come to class because of overslept or wake up late, as this class was set up in the morning at 9.00am. Most of students give reasons why they are wakeup late because doing assignments or doing their final year project(FYP). The second biggest factors were getting sick and influenced by their friends which holds same percentage value (60%).

We can see the rate of absentees were increased started from the middle of semester (week 7th) in the Fig.2. This is because the due date for VIVA presentations were getting closer. So, most of students were pushing themselves to make their project perform well. But, because of that, it’s affect their attendance performance.
