Current Issues in Malaysia : Euthanasia
The Euthanasia Prevention Coalition is urging its supporters to boycott Me Before You in order not to give any money to the production of movies that maintain the ideology that death is better than living with pain. “This is a campaign to oppose the line this movie promotes”said the group..In the Me Before You plot, Will Traynor, who was paralysed in an accident, decides to die by assisted suicide at a Swiss suicide clinic. His family, who is incredibly wealthy, hires Louisa Clark, as his care-giver.As the story progresses, Clark falls in love with Traynor, but Traynor has decided that death is better than living with a disability. Traynor dies by assisted suicide in Switzerland and, of course, he loves Clark so much he leaves her an inheritance.
On feb 6,Canada join to legalized physician assisted suicide or familiar we call as Euthanasia with other country like Belgium,Switzerland and Netherland. Therefore, do Malaysia should legalized Euthanasia ?
Euthanasia can be define as an act of deliberately ending a person life to relieve pain or suffering .It can classified 2 group which are Voluntary euthanasia and non-voluntary euthanasia.Voluntary euthanasia is where a person want to die and ask to for help to do so.They also get consent from doctor which consist of their mental health is fine and voluntary to do so with no pressure from anyone.Non-voluntary euthanasia ,is where the person is unable to to give their consent toward the euthanasia for example they in coma state and the family makes the decision for them instead because they cannot bear with the pain of that person.
Euthanasia also has active and passive . "Active euthanasia" is sometimes used to refer to deliberately intervening to end someone's life – for example, by injecting them with a large dose of sedatives."Passive euthanasia" is sometimes used to refer to causing someone's death by withholding or withdrawing treatment that is necessary to maintain life.
Arguments for
Freedom of choice: The patient should be able to make their own choice.
Quality of life: Only the patient really knows how they feel, and how the physical and emotional pain of illness and prolonged death impacts their quality of life.
Witnesses: Many who witness the slow death of others believe that assisted death should be allowed because the patient show painless dead.
Humane: It is more humane to allow a person with intractable suffering to be allowed to choose to end that suffering.
Loved ones: It can help to shorten the grief and suffering of loved ones.
We already do it: If a beloved pet has intractable suffering, it is seen as an act of kindness to put it to sleep. Why should this kindness be denied to humans?
Arguments against
Religious arguments: Several faiths see euthanasia as a form of murder and morally unacceptable. Suicide, too, is "illegal" in some religions. Morally, there is an argument that euthanasia will weaken society's respect for the sanctity of life.
Mental illness: A person with depression is more likely to ask for assisted suicide, and this can complicate the decision.
Palliative care: Good palliative care makes euthanasia unnecessary.
Regulation: Euthanasia cannot be properly regulated.
PETALING JAYA: 5 years an old 75 year old man doesn’t left his bed. He wants to get up and walk around in the garden with his grandchildren - but his cancer just don’t let him.He is fully relying on caregivers to change his diapers and pyjamas before there are drenched through with urine. His caregivers have to turn him every few hours to prevent bed sores.
Day-in, day-out he takes heavy doses of medication that leave him barely lucid. Most of the people he grew up are dead and buried, and at this stage of his existence there is no quality of life, no recovery for his terminal illness...There are no other alternatives, for a patient must endure this suffering for as long as the body keeps breathing as they are
Ex-president of the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA), Datuk Dr. NKS Tharmaseelan think that to get euthanasia legalized in Malaysia is not gonna happen in the time near.
"I personally feel nobody has a right to take a life when he cannot create one. Miracles do happen, what may be considered incurable today may become curable in the near or distant future. We should realise that medical science is still an imperfect and incomplete science," said Tharmaseelan in an email to The Star Online.
Addressing passive euthanasia, such as the removal of life support, Tharmaseelan added the one who can be justified is only to brain dead patient who depent fully to life supporter machine to continue alive. As the patient has a low percentage to survive and back to normal life and also they in a long drawn-out painful death
Lawyer Andrew Kow "As a matter of principle, a person have the right to make decision on their own life, this is a fundamental principle of the right to life. The question is whether society is ready to accept that," said Khoo, who serves as Bar Council Human Rights Committee chair but emphasises this is his personal view.
"If there are compelling medical reasons for assisted suicide, then I would agree with the concept," said Khoo.
"What constitutes quality of life has to be established, but will it be objective or subjective criteria. Quality of life has to go to life and death issues, it cannot simply be about quality of life, it has to be quality of life in comparison to something that is life-threatening," said Khoo.
Tharmaseelan agree that Malaysia will not compatible for legalizing euthanasia as our culture is contrary with euthanasia .
As we know , Malaysia is a Islamic nation with many people in Malaysia belief in creator.Life is a precious gift from god that we need to appreaciate and be thankful .Many of religious person said that euthanasia is similar to suicide because you take your on life but with just different method.
There also can be mistakes when someone want to undergo euthanasia for example emotional decision or mental state problem .Many suicidal take their own life because emotional decision. "Euthanasia is only voluntary if the patient has a lucid understanding of available options and consequences. ," said Tharmaseelan. The patient that want to undergo euthanasia need to have good mental state so that they know what are they dealing with. Therefore it such a complicated process and high risk to determine whether someone is in good mental state and no emotional distract the decision of the patient. It can be disaster to the assisted suicide or doctor if they make a mistake selected someone that are not realible to undergo the process as doctor is to help safe a live not to take a life.It is opposite to what they stand for and they purpose.as a savior .
From my point of view life is a great gift from Allah (s.w.t.) and is to be cherished and protected at all times. Prophet Muhammad has said: "Do not harm yourself or others”. Prophet also approved the principle of medical treatment and has encouraged us to seek it. In an authentic hadith, he is quoted as saying: "O, servants of Allah, seek treatment, for Allah has not sent down any illness without sending down its treatment." 30 Islam encourages medication; but, once medication is seemingly futile; refusing, withholding, withdrawing and discontinuing such medication is allowed. While Islam gives importance to saving life, it also makes it clear that death cannot be avoid, part of human contract with Allah (s.w.t.) and part of the journey on this planet. “Every soul will have a taste of death. In the end, to us, shall you be brought back” (Qur'an 29:57). “Everyone shall taste death. And only on the day of resurrection shall you be paid your wages in full. And whoever is removed away from the fire and admitted to paradise, this person is indeed successful. The life of this world is only the enjoyment of deception" (Qur'an 3:185). "Nor does anyone know what it is that he will earn tomorrow: Nor does anyone know in what land he is to die. Verily with Allah is full knowledge and Allah is acquainted with all things "(Qur’an 31: 34). The life and death are the prerogatives of Allah (s.w.t.) as categorically stated in the Qur’an: “Blessed is He, in Whose Hands is the Sovereignty, and He is able to all things. Who has created death and life that He may test you, which of you is best in conduct and He is the Mighty and the Forgiving”(Qur'an 67: 1-2). Death does not happen except by Allah’s permission, as dictated in the Qur'an: “it is not given to any soul to die, but with the permission of Allah at an appointed time”(Qur'an 3:145). Muslims believe that Allah (s.w.t.) is the Creator and the Owner of all life and only He will end it through natural death. “Allah gives life and death, and Allah sees well all that you do”(Qur'an 3:156). One may safely infer from this verse that if a physician increases dosage of painful medication, being fully aware that this would in effect cause death of the patient, he would then be held liable for terminating the life of his patient, which equates to murder under the shari`a.
