Challenges Of Employment In Engineering

On 16 April 2019, an industrial seminar on Challenges of Employment in Engineering has been given by Ir. Juraimi Masood in P19a, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. He is a General Manager Project Integration of Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) which responsible for the planning, construction, test and delivery of the various packages within the Port development plan. He developed the port from white paper and completed a Container terminal consists of a total of 5Km berth length with 62 Quayside Container Cranes and all the other supporting facilities and equipment. Moreover, he has gone through various management transformation with different management styles and different CEOs. He also a specialist in Electrical System Concept and Design and have possession of 132kV Competency Certificate from the Energy Commission of Malaysia, and currently handling the 132kV system within the port.

Firstly, he talked about his study and career background. He started his studies at UTM Jalan Gurney now known as Jalan Semarak from 1980 until 1982 and the continued his studies at the University of Hartford from 1984 until 1986. His career was started at Sime Darby Engineering Sdn Bhd as an Electrical and Instrumentation Engineer in Pasir Gudang, Johor from 1991 until 1996. His project was included the construction of offshore facilities such as BNG B1 and BNG B2 gas production modules for Petronas Carigali, Living Quarters for M1PQ and M1PQ for Shell Petroleum, and Jernih A production modules for Esso. Then, he changed his career to a Principal Engineer at KTA Tenaga SB from 1996 until 1997. He has been assigned as Resident Engineer representing KTA Tenaga Consultancy and the client (KLCC Holding) in the supervision of the Gas District Cooling Project for KLCC Development. Lastly, he transferred to the PTP as a General Manager from October 1997 until now and he responsible for the forward planning and the development of the Port Expansion Plan. Among his completed projects in PTP were 2018 Berth 5&6 upgrade works from 80tons loading to 100 tons loading, 2014 Successful completion of berth 13&14 and the associated Container Yard, Demolition and scraping off 2 units Panamax size Quay Cranes, and many more.

Furthermore, he shared about safety and working environment in PTP which involves gigantic technology and advanced facilities. He assured students to be prepared with the future world and occupied themselves with knowledge as much as possible alongside with social skill and technical skill. This is because some contractor can be irresponsible by faking document or data and even also about the services that they stated in the letter but not doing that at the site. This means that it must ensure that contractor to do all the jobs according to all requirement. Thus, it can ensure that no additional cost will be affected by the overall project cost. The skills that must be possessed among the engineers were listed below:

  • Ability to function effectively in a group as a leader or manager as well as an effective member
  • Ability to acquire and apply knowledge of fundamental engineering
  • Ability to communicate effectively to colleague and community
  • Ability to undertake problem identification, formulation and solution
  • Ability to conduct and design experiment as well as analysing and interpreting data

The soft skills and technical skills need to be built before graduating in order to satisfy employers expectation and also make work in the future easier with the ability to perform in. Lastly, he said that all of the success can be achieved by following the ethics of an engineer. If the engineer does not follow the code of ethics, fatality and disasters might happen, or even death. Therefore, engineers must be careful when designing something that is going to be used by the public.

PROFESSIONAL NEGLIGENCE

Nowadays, issues on professional negligence among professional careers is very common. There are many cases reported on a professional that did not follow the rules and violate the code of ethics. This purpose of this research is to determine what kind of negligence actions will cause procedural accidents. The questionnaires were used as research instruments to measure their opinion on professional negligence. 40 students from SKEE, SKEL, and SKEM program contributed to the questionnaire by giving their opinion. The data and result obtained will be analyzed in terms of graphs, tables, and figures. The results have shown that the majority of student choose to did not do periodic inspections on the equipment because the equipment still functioning well as their option. From the results, the types of negligence actions that will cause procedural accidents were determined.

3-D OPTIMIZATION OF IBC SOLAR CELL USING SENTAURUS TCAD

Solar energy is acknowledged as one of the renewable energy that can be used for the next generation, but the low energy conversion of solar is the main concern of current technology. Previous research has shown that there are several methods to increase efficiency, one of them is to change the performing structural of the solar cell. In this work, the efficiency of the conventional solar cell will be further increased by changing the cell thickness and emitter doping concentration. By using this method the amount of reflection can be reduced and at the same time increasing the absorption of the solar cell. Interdigitated-Back Contact (IBC) solar cell will be used for this work. This structure is chosen because of the absence of front contact that can block a few of light to go through into solar cell. The goal is to find the optimum parameter that can generate high efficiency. Sentaurus TCAD simulation is used to create the solar cell structure and to do a detailed analysis of performance parameters. Sentaurus TCAD tool is used to generate P-V curve and I-V curve which then be used to evaluate the efficiency of Interdigitated-Back Contact (IBC) solar cell.
