Introduction
Industry visit is one of the most important part of Technology and Information System course. So far, there have been 3 industry visit with the first one at Centre for Information and Communication Technology (CICT) UTM, the second one at School of Electrical Engineering UTM, and the last one at OneMaker Medini.
According to OneMaker’s official website, OneMaker Group Pte Ltd (OMG) is a leading Maker-centric service provider in the region. They have been advocating and supporting the nascent Maker movement in Singapore since their establishment in 2014. Their core business revolves around Maker education, digital prototyping services and corporate professional development. Their experience in building, supporting and operating Makerspaces for both educational and corporate institutions allow them to better understand their clients' needs and to serve them well accordingly.
Site Visit Outline
We visited OneMaker Medini on November 24th from 8am until 8pm. We first gathered at CICT UTM before leaving for the visit. First, we went to Forest City and spent 20 minutes to look around and gather some information. After that we headed to OneMaker Medini. There were three workshop at the event. The first one talking about Technological Disruption, the second about Robot Making, and the third about Design Making.
Points of Note
During our visit, we learned that computer science is not about being a programmer but computer science includes a lot of aspects such as Industry 4.0,Artificial Intelligence,and Internet of Things(IoT). We learned that this world is changing into a new era, for instance digital era. Everything that still use human resource will be replaced by machines, A.I, robot ,etc. But still human will be the controller for the machines, A.I, etc. At OneMaker we gained a lot of informations about what’s happening right now and it is unbelievable that Industry 4.0 is happening right now.
OneMaker made us experienced what is feels like to live in Industry 4.0 era, such as drone experience, 3D printing , A.I and 3D modelling. The OneMaker Workshop is already set up into sections so we went to each section comfortably and well-organized. Each section will include about 3 groups that are already divided since our TIS class.
Conclusion
Our industry visit to Onemaker Medini is really beneficial for us. From this visit we received a lot of information about Technology and Information System, on how it significantly changes from the past. On this new era we realized that human resource on IT is decreasing and jobs keep being replaced by A.I, robot and other machines. From this we realize we have to change the way we learn technology and information system, because being just a programmer won’t cut it, instead we have to keep learning so we have the resources to fight and adapt in this new industry.
The strengths of this visit is that we given the chance to test the new tech, and the system is done really well without any problems, and the technologies explained to us really well. The weakness from this industry visit is that we only have a short time to learn about the technologies provided.
