SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY THINKING

Technological thinking has played a role in science throughout history. During the ancient period mechanical devices served as ways to investigate mathematical and scientific ideas. In the medieval period the mechanical clock provided scientists with a new way to conceive of time. By the period of the Scientific Revolution the clock came to play an important role in the development of the mechanical philosophy and new devices, like the air pump served as the basis for the experimental philosophy. During that period technology also came to provide a new ideology for science. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the emergence of the engineering sciences played an important role in scientific thinking with thermodynamics serving as a new way to understand all scientific processes. Engineering concepts such as strain, elasticity, and vortex motion provided a way to think about electromagnetism and theories of the aether. The scientification of technology during the second half of the nineteenth century led to science-based industries which in turn led to industry-based science emerging from the industrial research laboratories. By the twentieth century the military-industrial-academic complex and the emergence of big science combined to create techno science in which the distinctions between science and technology became blurred. The role of technological thinking in science culminated in the computer replacing the heat engine, and the clock before that, as a new model to understand scientific phenomena.

MY REFLECTION || ACHIEVEMENTS

First and foremost, I would like to express my gratitude to my lecturer Dr. MANSOUREH EBRAHIMI for teaching us this subject Science and Technology THINKING (UHIT2302). The knowledge that was share to us was so meaningful and helpful for us.

     When I first entered the class, I never knew that this subject would teach us of the early age of technology. I thought that I would teach us the common history of computer such as how supercomputer was created, how the technology become one with us. However, what was thought in the class was more to develop our social skill and teach us to think creatively such as the great people from the ancient for example Alexander the Great, Prophet Muhammad SAW and Ibn Sina. It helps us to socialize among each other with the activities that was held during the class and think creatively to come out with outcomes that would be helpful to all not individually.

    Secondly, this subject teach us that religion is the main reason of why technology was develop. It shows us that religion foresees that technology could bring pros and cons. Religion is one of us, whatever we are doing always relate it to religion so that would help us back on the track. The reason of why a dynasty destroy in the first place was because its people start to feel comfortable and make no changes or renewal of their own place. Religion is also important to make human realize that the technology they created is only for good.

    Next, this subject teaches the history of certain dynasty that related to technology. This make me realize that it is important to learn from the history so that the mistake could be prevent and like some people say “We learned from the history”. It also an open-eye for me, as I start to realize that people from before are also creative and innovative but what lack from them are moral and it is something that we should take as an advice.

    In this subject the part that I like the most about our final video project. Before we creating out video, we have to plan the content of the video. In week 10, we present our video storyboard to Dr. MANSOUREH EBRAHIMI. Dr MANSOUREH EBRAHIMI gave us some suggestion so that we can improve our video content.

In this section, I learned to be cooperate with team members to plan the content of the video and be humble to accept the suggestion from others. Where we gained knowledge regarding how the transfer of knowledge happen in the center of knowledge transfer in Islam world. After finishing my last lecture on the subject of Science and Technology Thinking, I discovered that this subject not only tells us about human history, but it explains how human thought has changed over time.

    In conclusion, the whole process of learning helped to change my perspective on the importance of certain things that might look simple to something that would be a great help in the future. It also increases my curiosity regarding many more that lies within the history that I don’t realize or know yet.
