MINI REPORT
The goal of the internship talk is to familiarize the student with the methods for finding internships so that they can land a job much more quickly. The third-year chemical engineering student can benefit greatly from internship talk because they need to locate an internship program before the end of semester 6.
The IChemE-UTM SC served as the the organizer. The event was broadcast live on Facebook on January 23, 2021, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. The event, however, was divided into two segments, from 9 to 10 p.m. and 8 to 9 to 9 p.m. The 2 slots were set aside for the speakers to share their perspectives on getting internships.
Adrian Teoh Jia Wei, a fourth-year Bioprocess Engineering student, spoke in the opening slot. His prior internship employer was the Forest Research Institute Malaysia. He offered advice on platforms to use to locate internship opportunities as well as pointers on how to create resume and succeed in interviews.
Fabin Kok Zhen Cheng, a fourth-year student majoring in petroleum engineering, spoke in the second slot. He previously interned at PTTEP Sawarak Oil Limited. He shares advice with the audience on how to create a strong cover letter for employers and how to be a good intern. The talk was concluded with a QnA session with the students and also a quiz session. The speakers did their best to answer all the questions asked by the students.
SELF REFLECTION
I gained a lot of knowledge about internships and how to effectively apply for internships after attending this talk on internships. This program's primary objective, which was to inform students about internships, was successful. The speakers also discussed their work-related internship experiences, which provided me a general idea of what an internship entails.
In addition, the speakers discussed the particular skills needed for each industry. From this, I learned that as we move toward industry revolution 4.0, we should arm ourselves with knowledge of coding and programming. This will make it easier for us to handle the industry revolution 4.0.
The speakers answered all the students' questions and gave them more information about LinkedIn and how to use it to find internships, resulting in a very high degree of interaction between the audience and the speakers. In order for the event organizer to gauge the level of student comprehension throughout the event, there was also a quiz exercise in which the students took part and responded to the questions.
I'm happy I attended this talk because it not only discusses how to find an internship but also the importance of internship programs for engineering students. I wish that IChemE-UTM SC runs more educational programs for the students.
