The IEM Consultancy Space, broadcasted on Facebook Live on October 20, 2021, served as an illuminating platform for understanding the pivotal roles played by the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) and the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM). The session commenced with an insightful exploration of the pathway to professional engineering, offering a comprehensive roadmap for aspiring engineers. By delving into the intricacies of IEM and BEM, attendees gained a deep understanding of the professional landscape and the regulatory frameworks shaping the field.

A primary focus was on the advantages of student membership, explaining how it serves as a bridge between academic endeavors and practical engineering experiences. The presentation emphasized how crucial it is for students to get involved with these universities early on since they offer them invaluable tools, career guidance, and a network that goes beyond the classroom. The benefits of switching to graduate membership were emphasized as the discussion went on. Participants were informed about the wide range of options that await them as they go from school to the workplace, with a focus on the value of networking, lifelong learning, and ongoing professional development.

Due to the event was interactive and was made possible by Facebook Live, attendees were able to interact with the presenters and ask questions, which created a lively learning atmosphere. The IEM Consultancy Space, which offered insightful information on the several support systems offered by IEM and BEM, was essentially a comprehensive examination of the path from student to professional engineer.

Self Reflection

Participating in the IEM Consultancy Space was a transformative experience that deepened my understanding of the engineering profession and the instrumental role played by professional bodies. The detailed exploration of the pathway to professional engineering ignited a sense of purpose and direction in my academic journey. Learning about the functions of IEM and BEM not only clarified the regulatory landscape but also instilled confidence in the integrity and standards upheld by these institutions.

The segment on student membership resonated deeply with me, as it elucidated the tangible benefits of early engagement with professional bodies. The emphasis on mentorship, resources, and networking opportunities underscored the importance of actively participating in such organizations during my academic tenure. As I absorbed the insights into the advantages of graduate membership, I began to envision the long-term benefits of continuous learning and professional development.

In essence, the IEM Consultancy Space has left an indelible mark on my perception of engineering as a profession. It has motivated me to seek proactive involvement with IEM and BEM, recognizing them not only as regulatory bodies but as integral partners in shaping a successful and fulfilling engineering career.
