An industrial talk was being held on 25 of September 2018 at Astana Hall, Kolej Tuanku Canselor, UTM Johor Bahru. The duration for this talk was two hours from 2pm to 5pm. The industrial talk was included two different topic of talks, which one was about Internet of Things (IoT) in Industrial Applications by Anssi Ikonen, Senior Lecturer from Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, Helsinki, Finland; and Machine Learning (ML), from Buzzword to Value Creation by Mr. Lock Choon Hou, Design Engineer from Intel Corporation, Penang, Malaysia for the other one. After attending this industrial talk, I felt there was an increment in knowing about industry evolution and more application and operation in artificial intelligence creation.

First and foremost, Anssi Ikonen was giving a small introduction about the typical culture in his country, Finland. Then, He talked about IoT revolution for the present and future existing in human’s live. He used a fridge to conduct the intelligence in Information Technology (IT). The sense of using the information given to make decision and process a conclusion is one of the discussion about the rule used in between fixed rule or dynamic rule. The IoT ecosystem in common Internet working also being introduced which related areas are including embedded systems, sensor networks, cyber-physical systems, real-time systems and pervasive or ubiquitous computing. About the vision and growth of IoT, he presented that there was a rapid growth of the IoT and is predicted to be continued from time to time in the future.

Besides, new things in augmenting life were also being evaluated with Smart City, Smart Car, Smart Me, Smart Home and Smart and connected Buildings. Through the Finnish Center of statistics presented, the connected roadways was given as an success example of IoT to get people the information they need for a smoother and safer drive by connecting roads and drivers. The mobile robots called Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) are being used for moving items from one point to another at Tesla’s Gigafactory in Nevada is also one of the example for connected factory. Before ending his talk, Anssi Ikonen emphasized the enabling technologies of IoT includes aspects of portability, miniaturization, connectivity and holistic sustainability.

After that, Mr. Lock Choon Hou was giving his talk about ML by sharing an achievement of beating StarCraft 2’s video gamming cheater artificial intelligence (AI) which done by AI agents from Tencent as a starting. AI is any technique which enables computers to mimic human behavior by receiving input including data, sensors and images and in order to carry out output such as action, movement or text. In another way, ML is subset of AI techniques which use statistical methods to enable machines to improve with experiences, while deep learning is subset of ML which make the computation of multi-layer neural networks feasible. He presented that ML involve training section which included receiving training data, doing feature extraction and machine learning algorithm such as Hello Google, Siri and Waze, and prediction section to carry out prediction. The types of ML could be classified into supervised learning, unsupervised learning and reinforcement learning on reward system and recommendation system.

He also interpreted the Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) in the system of machine learning algorithm and an example of object classification with ANN. Another is Deep Neural Networks (DNN) which build features automatically based on training data with less dependency on the domain expert. He said that the use of video, computer vision and deep learning is growing rapidly which now can be found in financial services, transportation, public sector and other aspects. The Open Visual Inference and Neural Network Optimization Toolkit (OpenVINOTM), hardware accelerators such as CPU, GPU and VPU; and Streaming Analytics Framework (SAF) are the handy tools introduced to accelerate the visual processing. Lastly, he emphasized that students who are interested in ML could start with enhancing the knowledge in programming and mathematics.

As a conclusion, the rapid growth in industry evolution is now providing people an opportunity to involve themselves in IT which cannot be considered separately from IoT and AI which used the application of ML is now everywhere. In my opinion, it is obvious to see that deep learning to the path of high technology application in life is important for future development. From this industrial talk, i was acknowledged to the importance of IoT for smarter life and the intelligent application in operation of AI. I learned to use the knowledge possessed to help me in solving problems. For instance, in data collection and analyzing for holistic innovation to bring agility in production. The fundamental understanding of machine learning with the potential applications will also make me a smart IT consumer in my future life.
