SECI2143 - Probability & Statistical Data Analysis (Sec 10)

Introduction

Statistical Data Analysis is the science of collecting, exploring and presenting large amount of data to show the underlying trends and patterns. We are able to learn the ways and the knowledges throughout the course which help us in doing our group project which is a case study when we also need to do suitable descriptive statistics for the project. After the explanation from our lecturer, we knew that we need to observe and choose a suitable topic for our case study and carry out survey to collect primary data. We decided to choose the topic on “Environmental Issue and Control in UTM” after discussed among my group members and with our lecturer, Dr Azurah. Environmental issue is a big challenge to overcome and getting serious all over the country nowadays. We cannot deny that there are many environment problems occur in UTM. So, our group would like to carry out our project regarding on this topic “Environmental Issue and Control in UTM” so as to study the trends and to raise the awareness among the staffs and students about the environmental issue in UTM.

Reflection

We have chosen the method of collecting data by surveying after we had done discussion among group members. A Google Form was created and sent to the other students from different courses so that we collect data from respondents with different backgrounds such as residential colleges and faculties. We are able to study the level of cleanliness from other places other than our own residential college or faculty. Other than that, we also seek suggestions and opinions from the students about the program “Zero Waste” which is conducting in UTM. This is to help us to study the effectiveness of the program in reducing the environmental problems in the university surrounding.  I would like to thank and appreciate all of the respondents who willing to sacrifice their time to help us in filling the survey form.

After that, we started to learn and use R studio in analysing data collected. R is a programming language for statistical computing and graphics. Although it is quite difficult to use but we are able to complete the tasks among our group members with good teamwork. We can draw the graphs such as histogram, boxplot, and scatterplot by using R studio. We then study the patterns from the graphs and wrote discussions and explanation for a better understanding for the whole case study. From the results, I think that some of the respondents feel unsatisfied about the cleanliness of the environment in UTM especially in the residential colleges as they can see rubbish are scattered on the floor and the trash bins are always full with rubbish. Some of the respondents think that the environmental issue should be taken seriously and the program carried out should be improved in order to solve the problem effectively. 

Conclusion

Environment is always an important part for us to conserve but it is very difficult to be taken care without the cooperation of all of us. The outbreak of COVID-19 recently has brought many hardships all over the world. We have to stay at home during the Movement Control Order. We have to attend class and do all the assignments online so we face difficulties to discuss about our group projects as well as this Project 1. Luckily, I feel grateful and thankful to my group members who have contributed much together in completing this project and solved all the problems faced in doing this project such as the making of presentation video. I hope that all of the citizen in UTM have the awareness and be more concerned on the environment surrounding as well as take good care of the cleanliness of the environment. Do not forget that it is our responsibilty to take care of the environment. Save the Environment, Save the World.

Introduction

As the continuous of Project 1, we are required to do Project 2 individually for this course. Project 2 is a individual project which required us to find a case study with secondary data from an organization or website. We need to do data analysis using suitable inferential statistics and all tests and calculations have to be done using R studio. Secondary data is data that has been collected through primary sources then has made available for research. In Project 2, I decided to choose the topic "Sleep Patterns of the Railroad Dispatchers" and the dataset is from Kaggle. Good quality of sleep is very important to maintain our healthiness. In the case study, there are factors that affect the sleep patterns of the railroad dispatchers. So, in Project 2, I have chose some of the variables from the dataset of the case study to analyse the relationship between those variables and do data analysis based on the topic chosen.

Reflection

At first, I have faced many problems in choosing a suitable dataset through online for the project because I did not really understand the inferential statistics that should be applied on those data. After I have learnt about the inferential statistics through online class, I finally chose a dataset suitable for my project. I faced many difficulties in doing my project because I could not gain more understanding using only online classes so I have to search more and read more on myself so as to analyse data in project. I have learnt to analyse data using R studio and study patterns from the graphs which enable me to study the relationships between those variables. 

Conclusion 

It is not easy to do all the assignments and project online when we unable to ask questions face to face with lecturer. However, with the online teaching of my lecturer on the topics related to the project and discussion with friends, I was able to learn and apply inferential statistics using R studio to analyse data. I am very thankful to our lecturer and my friends who helped me throughout this project.
