Week 1
Attend company orientation for new joiners. Get to know company background, company field of expertise, company vision and mission and lastly company rules and regulations. Was asked to joined daily morning manufacturing meeting. It is a meeting between the manufacturing engineers and the technicians at the production line. Manufacturing engineers will discuss with technician lead to plan the manufacturing plan for today. AMAT department is using cellular manufacturing method, where the assembly task is splitted into a few modules and assigned to different technicians. Then, the modules are integrated together and some testing is performed on the final product to make sure that the product suits customer's specification.
Joined daily morning manufacturing meeting. Helped the shipment of newly built machine to customer in Singapore. Learnt the shipping process and SOP of large semiconductor machinery. The machinery is shipped using a large wooden crate. Fixed crane is used to facilitate with the moving of the machine from the rolling transport platform to the base of wooden crate. Foam is used to make sure that the vibration during the shipping process is minimized and water proofing packaging is used. Silica gel is also placed underneath the machine so that no moisture is accumulated during the shipping process. The wooden crate is also tested using a moisture meter to make sure that the wooden crate is dry enough. Pictures of the entire process is taken and recorded for the purpose of internal documentation as well as for customer’s reference.
Week 2
Attended daily manufacturing meeting. Helped with the documentation and filing of assembly checklist of previous shipped products dated back to year 2020. Checked if the assembly checklist is complete for the documentation and filing purpose. If the files are missing, I was required to print out the missing files and get the signature from the people in charge. After the assembly checklist is complete, it is scanned using a printer and the scanned files are shredded to protect the confidential and private information of company and customers.
Learnt how to calibrate torque driver and torque wrench using torque tester. Check the revisions of assembly checklist in the production line is the same with the latest division posted in the company’s quality management system. Prepare a purchase list of tools needed following the current working instructions (engineering work order).
Week 3
Attend daily manufacturing meeting. Helps with the assembly of wafer machine outer casing (dual chamber). The dual chamber consists of two parts, the base and the upper frame. The upper frame is assembled to the base using overhead crane. Alignment key is used to make sure that the upper body and base is lined up. Total of 56 bolts is installed at the base to secure them together. The bolt is torque to 20Nm for the first round then it if torque again with 30Nm following a spiral bolt tightening sequence. Help with the preparation (conversion of old template to new template) of working instruction draft of helium leak test for monolith. Help with the checking of engineering order revision to see whether they are up to date or not. Help to compile a list of tools (torque wrench/ torque driver) needed in the work instruction.
Week 4
Helps with the revision and modification of work instruction, particularly on the addition of leak test procedure in the working instruction/assembly process. Helps with the entry of engineering data into KPI indicator and leak tests indicator. Attend daily manufacturing meeting. Helps with the documentation of completed assembly checklist. Helps to prepare the documents needed for calibration.
Week 5
Prepare assembly checklist for IMF system. Prepare new label tags in cleanroom. Perform time study at cleanroom and report to department manager. Time study is a study to measure the time taken for each assembly process to be completed by the technician. A guideline/time limit is provided by the customer and SAM Meerkat is expected to perform the assembly within the time frame. A simple stopwatch is used to record the time needed to assemble each sub module in the system. Helps to count and pack the aging assembly parts from production site, aka the cleanroom. Then pack them into boxes and arrange them onto a wood pallet. Help to pack aging assembly parts into boxes and put them into a wooden pallet. Helps to print “work in progress and complete” tags and laminate them. Count and pack the blank off plate (a plate of metal to cover up the machine) as returning parts.
Week 6
Helps with the calibration of tools used in production (torque wrench, torque driver) using torque tester system. Uploads the calibration sheet to company’s database. The calibration recording is done using statistical process control (SPC), where a tolerance of 6% is permitted for each tool with specified torque value. Upper limit and lower limit of the tool is set accordingly. The tools are required to calibrate three times per week and the results to be recorded into excel sheet. A graph containing the desired value, upper limit and lower limit is generated. Helps with the packing and counting of broken/wore parts (CAP FOOT) and to be sent for maintenance/renewal. Helps with the amendment of working instruction. Upload the calibration sheet into company’s database. Helps with the transition to IR4.0 with the working instruction, helps to construct the online working instruction system using SAM Unity. With the new system, manufacturing engineer can select the configuration that is required by the customer and the working instruction will be generated accordingly. This is due to the nature of the AMAT department where the product that we product is low volume high configuration about 7 units shipped per week). Technicians will access the working instruction by using iPad that will be assigned to them. After each assemble process is done, they are required to tick the step using iPad and take picture as a proof is necessary. This greatly increase the productivity and smoothness of the highly configurable production line and reinforce the quality assurance process because now every step and process is documented electronically with evidence in the form of images or video. Help with the translation of working instructions from English to Bahasa Melayu.
Week 7
Attended daily manufacturing meeting. Translation or working instruction for IMF. Create working instruction in digital format in WIS (working instruction system) inside SAM Unity. Help to print out labels needed for cleanroom. Help with the shipment of dual chamber outer casing. Create working instruction in digital format in WIS (working instruction system) inside SAM Unity.
Week 8
Attend daily manufacturing meeting. Helps with the conversion of working instruction into paperless format. Helps to upload the current working instruction into company’s newly developed system.
Week 9
Attend daily manufacturing meeting. Helps with the conversion of working instruction into paperless format. Helps to upload the current working instruction into company’s newly developed system.
Week 10
Attend daily manufacturing meeting. Helps with the conversion of working instruction into paperless format. Helps to upload the current working instruction into company’s newly developed system. Help with the simulation of cycle time for helicoil (screws and bits) preparation. First we count the time required to pack one set of helicoil needed for one system. Then record it and we can know the time needed for the preparation and how much manpower should we allocate next time. Verification of equipment specification. Production wanted to add new equipment, use the drawings provided by vendor and verify it with existing equipment in the cleanroom, make sure that the dimensions are the same. Most important is the two mounting holes need to be in the exact location or else the equipment cannot fit. Perform monthly tools calibration.
Week 11
Attend daily manufacturing meeting. Documentatioon of assembly checklist. Packing of Helicoil.
Week 12
Attend daily manufacturing meeting. Documentation of assembly checklist. Packing of Helicoil. Pass down work to successor. Cleansuit stock picking. I also had a farewell lunch with my department manager, supervisor and all the engineers at my department. I appreciate their teaching and guidance throughout the 12 weeks internship and it would definitely be a memorable experience of my university life.
