Reflection on Experiment 2: Building a Virtual Instrument
SKEE 2133 Electronic Instrument & Measurement – Section 09
Experiment 2: Building a Virtual Instrument
Group members:
- Chuah Shi Yi
- Law Jing Yi
- Lee Wan Ting
The objective of this experiment is:
- To learn the basics of building a Virtual Instrument (VI).
- To learn how to analyze and save a signal using a virtual instrument.
Before we started the experiment, Dr. Anita briefly explained what we should do during the lab session. This experiment is done using a computer with pre-installed NI LabVIEW software.
In this experiment, we learned the some of the functions of Virtual Instruments such as Simulate Signal Express VI to change the signal type (sine wave, Sawtooth wave, square wave, etc.), knob to control the amplitude of the signal, Merge Signal function is to combine two separate signals so that both can display on the same graph and block diagram to modify the signal pattern. After we had done all the steps, we saved the results by using ‘Write To Measurement File Express VI’.
Figure 1: Data of saved results
In order to test our knowledge, we were assigned with 2 questions.
Questions 1:
Use the VI you have created to display two signals. Signal A is a sine wave with amplitude 2 and Signal B is the scaled version of Signal A with amplitude four times smaller.
Answer:

Figure 2b: Configure Formula of Signal B
Figure 2c: Block diagram of Q1
Figure 2d: Signal plot of Q1
Question 2:
Display three signals in which Signal A and B are the same as Question 1. Signal C is a square wave with an amplitude of 2.
Answer:

What I have obtained from this experiment:
- Learn how to build a virtual instrument using NI LabVIEW.
- Learn how to modify and analyze the signal.
Lastly, I would like to thank my lecturer, Dr. Anita, my friends and also my group members for helping me directly or indirectly throughout this experiment. Your assistance enables me to accomplish the experiment on time.
