Greetings all!! Its been a while since i write something eversince we all stop taking english lesson. Firstly, i'm Jiram, better known as Jeremy by some of my friends and I'm currently taking QS degree.
First and foremost, materials and specification is a course that allows newly students to learn more about the materials required in the construction process. It is a common mistake to speculate that quantity surveyors only quantify a buliding's cost without knowing the materials used in constructing a building. Hence, I strongly feel that this course will provide the knowledge that will equipped me once i've entered the working environment.
From the beginning of the semester, I had learned a variety of materials ranging from bricks, concrete, aggregates, timber, rock, glass, cement and etc. For instance, we learn the different types of bricks used in construction process of a building such as facing brick and engineering brick. Other than that, we had learn the manufacturing process in making cement. All this valuable knowledege will be handful in the years to come once we all have enter the jobforce.
So far during the early semester until now, we have done two test under the concrete chapter which is the slump test and cube test. Both of the test had provide an insight for all of us as it shows us the different strength of concrete achieved with different ratio of materials comprising cement, aggregates, sand and water. Through these tests, we found out the suitable ratio in making the mix of concrete with the ratio 1:2:4. It is vital for us as QS to know the right mixture for a concrete to avoid any mishaps in a building which may cost a lot in trms of financial. In other words, as a QS, we simply fail in doing our obligations. Hence I'm grateful to lern this course as it provides a vast knowledge and benefit to me.
To conclude my reflection, I would like to say how grateful I am to have Mr. Muzani as our lecturer for Materials And Specifications course. Under his guidance and patience, we all had learned a valuable lesson reagarding not only the different materials utilise in the construction but also the importance of being a quantity surveyor.
