Seminar related to industrial talk
A talk with title “BEM Code of Professional Conduct” was conducted by Ir Juraimi Mahsood from PTP Gelang Patah on 17 April 2018. Currently, he holds a position as Project Integration General Manager in PTP. During the talk, he talked about his experiences as an engineer after he graduated from university. When he holds a position as a resident engineer in heavy engineering, he shares to us about his job scope from planning, design, management and costing about the project that carry on or will be implemented in the future. Furthermore, he need to deal with all types of people including with customers, colleague, contractor, management team, and supplier to build a network which will benefits all the parties in the career path.
Ir Juraimi Mahsood explained to us what is the role of engineer and what should engineer do when they enter working environment. According to the talk, an engineer need to manage board of director and shareholders’ expectations. In addition, an engineer always need to standby to manage the development plan, creating and developing the master plan, determine clients’ requirements fulfill their and satisfaction. Besides, engineer need to upgrade themselves in every aspects and need to maintain high quality product and need to ensure the project is safe to use by all the people. Furthermore, a good engineer should good in communicate and deal with management, contractors, suppliers, shareholders, communities and authorities.
Ir Juraimi Mahsood give clear explanation related to employers’ expectation to the fresh graduate engineer and engineer. There are few expectations that which the management or employer want to get or able to perform from the engineer. First of all, the engineer need to have technical competence in a specific engineering discipline. Next, engineer need to work well in a group or teamworking. The effect of teamworking need to carry on by the engineer from follower to leader. Each stage of people need to work on their roles effectively in order to make the project a successful project. Engineers need to have the knowledge of engineering and apply the knowledge in the working environments. Next, engineer should have the ability to identify the problem occur and solve the problem in the shorter period. Engineer need to have social awareness on the public for sustainable environment and development. Employers expect the engineer to utilize a system approach to design, testing, and evaluate the performance of the project. Lastly, engineer need to be able to design and conduct experiment or testing to get the result. From the result, the engineer need to be able to analyse, discuss about the result and solve the negative outcome from the discussion to make it a better project or product. Ir Juraimi Mahsood hope future engineer and current engineer can be more hardworking and do not slack off from their duties or jobs. He also advised engineers when employer engineer some job which is not in their scope, just take it and solve it. This will give impressions to the management and they will appreciate your hard work in the future.
Regarding the topic of engineer ethic, Ir Juraimi Mahsood emphasize that the engineer should follow the standard and guidance from National Society of Professional Engineer (NSPE) and Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineer (IEEE). Engineer need to bear the responsibility in making decisions related with the safety, health and welfare of the public according to the code of ethics from IEEE. Engineer need to avoid from perceived conflicts of interest and honest, realistic in stating claims. From the code of ethics of NSPE, engineer should hold paramount for health, safety and welfare of the public by performing services in the areas of their competence and professionalism. Engineer need to issue public statement through truthful manner and do not disobey the code of the ethics and integrity. Ir Juraimi Mahsood mentioned that engineering ethics is the quite important and need to apply in the daily life especially practicing engineering in the surrounding.
