REPORT ‘NASI LEMAK’ CHALLENGE
INTRODUCTION
‘Nasi lemak’ is a Malay traditional cuisine that consists of fragrant rice cooked in coconut milk and ‘pandan’ leaf. It iscommonly found in Malaysia, as it is considered as the national dish . Traditionally , nasi lemak is served with a hot spicy sauce called ‘ sambal tumis’ and usually includes various garnishes like fresh cucumber slices, small fried anchovies, roasted peanuts and hard-boiled or fried egg. As a more substantial meal, nasi lemak is also served with an additional protein dish such as fried chicken, sambal sotong ( cuttlefish in chilli), small fried fish, cockles, and ‘rendang’. For this ‘nasi lemak’ challenge project , we decided to try three nasi lemak dishes which are Nasi Lemak Wak Kentut , Nasi Lemak McD and Nasi Lemak Warung Pokok Ceri . In each restaurant, we planned to try tasting and share only one plate of nasi lemak to save our budget as we also went to every restaurant by booking Grab .
NASI LEMAK WAK KENTUT
We went to the Nasi Lemak Wak Kentut in Kulai , Johor . The restaurant is located near the main road and along the shophouses . So it is easy to spot . We came during the weekend so the restaurant is heavily packed with customers . At that time , the queue was too long and we need to be patient to wait for an empty table . We ordered one nasi lemak ayam and some beverages . The queue is long but when it is our turn , the service is very fast. In our opinion , the gravy “sambal tumis” was perfect and well-cooked . It is not too spicy but not too sweet. The freshly fried chicken was seasoned with their special spice that adds ultimate flavours. It is also fried to perfection and it becomes very crispy but juicy inside . The texture of the rice is something different than we ever tasted . The rice were tasty even if we eat on it’s own as it has a full flavour of coconut milk . However , the nasi lemak will feel incomplete without the ‘sambal’ and vice versa . We agreed that the dishes really compliment each other. Although we need to stand and queue for some time , we think this nasi lemak is worth the wait . We also ordered two more plates because it is so delicious.

NASI LEMAK MCD
Most Malaysian was delighted when McDonald’s announced that they are launching a new menu which is the Malay popular cuisine , ‘nasi lemak’ . We went to the nearest McDonald’s restaurant in our area which is at the AEON Mall in Taman Universiti. Once we tasted it , we think that the rice itself does not taste really good as the real nasi lemak sold by the ordinary seller at the stalls during breakfast . The rice is lack from the taste of the coconut milk , and we also get confused as the rice tastes more like ‘nasi ayam’. We are pretty disappointed with the rice. Plus , the presentation and proportion also does not fit the price . Well on the bright side , the taste of the ‘sambal’ and the fried chicken was very good , we acknowledge that . But some of us is having stomach ache after that, as they cannot bear the spiciness of the chicken . Overall , we suggest the ordinary nasi lemak instead of this .
NASI LEMAK WARUNG POKOK CERI
Next, we decided to try the ‘nasi lemak’ in Warung Pokok Ceri. This stall in Johor Bahru is well known among citizens and even the tourists for their various meals. Owned by two lovely Malay couple, the stall is named after its position under the cherry tree. However,we are pretty disappointed and not satisfied with their services. Maybe because it was so crowded at that time, they are so unfriendly and slow at their work. Their cleanliness is not at the top but it was clean even for standard ‘warong’ we known. However, the nasi lemak ayam we ordered are surely delightful. It suited as one of the top best ‘nasi lemak’ in Johor. The rice was properly cooked and the portion was medium enough for a person per dish. The fried chicken greatly affecting the overall taste for their ‘nasi lemak’. It was crunchy and delicious. The cook fried the chicken in small batches only when it runs out. So, we get only freshly fried chicken here. We also get perfectly fried chicken because the owner can pay closer attention to the smaller wok of chicken. The spiciness of sambal added the taste of ‘nasi lemak’. Without it, the dish felt incompleted. The stall also served other cuisines such as grilled fish and Kelantan food. But we do not have the opportunity to taste them because we are already full. It was one enjoyable moment for us to spent time eating together.

CONCLUSION
Overall, we really enjoyed every dish that we tasted. And from our observation ,we found that is the best nasi lemak in Johor valued by its softiness of the rice, the balanced flavour of sambal taste and the crispy fried chicken as well as great presentation. We conclude that the best ‘nasi lemak’ in Johor is Nasi Lemak Wak Kentut compared to Nasi Lemak McDonald’s
and Nasi Lemak Warung Pokok Ceri .
