Mini-report:
On 11th May 2023, I joined Jazari Innovation's Technicity 2023 program which was held in Parit Sulong, Batu Pahat. Robotics and programming can significantly leave a huge impact and empower students in rural areas. I firmly believe that all students in Malaysia should at least be exposed to robotics to ensure the nation's future is ahead of other nations. Thus I volunteered and joined as the Head of Unit Activity which is responsible for making sure all the activity events went smoothly. Each group of students contains a singular mentor that oversees the group. As the head of Unit Activity, I oversee and lead all the mentors and ensure that teamwork is in session. Strong communication skills and teamwork skills must be applied in order to ensure maximum effectiveness. A preparation phase was given to the students where they will be taught about Arduino programming language, electronics and wiring connection to the Arduino. After that, they were given time to build their own sumo robot to fight others during the tournament. After a quick recess, the tournament was held, and the winner was finally declared.
Self-reflection:
As the Head of Unit Activity, I am responsible to oversee the mentors and all the groups during their assembly period. Teamwork is enforced upon all team members to ensure that their robot is working and capable of winning the tournament. Furthermore, effective communication must happen to ensure that all the team members understood the task. Lastly, the mentors lead their mentees during the activity, ensuring that their mentees are heading toward the right direction and making sure that their mentees are capable of fighting during the tournament.
As the Head of Unit Activity, my leadership and communication skills play a pivotal role toward the program's success. My leadership skills are effectively used when I lead all the mentors to ensure that they are leading their mentees toward the right direction. Furthermore, with my leadership skills, I solved multiple issues that arose throughout the whole program. With my communication skills, I effectively informed the mentors on what their tasks are.
One of the challenges that arose is electronic components being broken. The solution is to keep a box of backup electronics so that the students can easily replace the broken one. Next challenge would be ensuring the connection is correct during the assembly of the robot. Students who just learned about electronics may have a hard time organizing the wires, and determining which connection is incorrect. Thus, I prepared a hard copy print of the diagram and informed the mentors to always check every electronics' connection based on the diagram.
