Vision

A Leading Gas Infrastructure and Utilities Company

Mission

We are a business entity. Gas infrastructure and utilities is our core business. We operate safely, reliably and competitively. We optimize the gas value chain to maximize returns for our stakeholders

COMPANY 'S BACKGROUND

Peninsular Gas Utilization (PGU) pipeline network, spanning 2,623 km, is an essential component of Peninsular Malaysia's natural gas delivery system. It is overseen by our Gas Transportation and Regasification (GTR) Division. The gas we ship is exported to Singapore and used as fuel by petrochemical facilities, power plants, and other businesses. Sungai Udang, Pengerang, Kerteh, and one from Thailand are the four main entry sites that support the network. As the least polluting fossil fuel for electricity production, natural gas is a low-carbon fuel that is cleaner. This is in line with the global movement toward more environmentally friendly energy. The PETRONAS Gas Control Centre in Segamat, Johor, oversees our gas transmission operations. The PGU pipeline guarantees effective and dependable gas transmission with a maximum capacity of 3,500 mmscfd. Our pipeline and Regasification Terminal (RGT) services, which are governed by the Energy Commission, provide competitive rates in the area. We have over 30 years of experience and have built a solid reputation for providing gas with exceptional dependability. We are a dependable partner in supplying Malaysia's energy needs because of our dedication to excellence in managing the PGU supply and delivery chain. We are in favour of the liberalization of the gas market in accordance with the government's ambitions under the 12th Malaysia Plan. PGB is allowing eligible shippers to use our pipelines and regasification terminals. This program encourages the import of liquefied natural gas (LNG), bolstering the expansion of Malaysia's gas sector and aiding the Energy Commission's endeavors to guarantee sustainable and safe energy for the nation's expanding internal requirements.

MY PERFORMANCE

During my industrial training at PETRONAS Gas Berhad, I had the chance to work on two major projects: the M1 Station Project and the Pigging Process. Both experiences were eye-opening and gave me a much deeper appreciation for the importance of maintaining pipelines effectively and safely.

The M1 Station Project was an emergency case involving a leak at one of the station’s valves. It was a fast-paced, high-pressure situation, where I learned how essential it is to act quickly and work as a team when things go wrong. My role involved assisting in increasing the pressure on the butane line to test for leaks, and I was part of the team that tightened the bolts to fix the leak. What really struck me was how vital real-time validation is in ensuring that everything is running smoothly. We had to constantly monitor the pressure to ensure the fix was holding, and I saw firsthand how surveillance plays a key role in keeping the pipeline safe. It was also a great experience to witness how quickly everyone came together to resolve the issue with minimal disruption.

On the other hand, the Pigging Process was a more routine but equally critical task. Pigging is done every 10 to 12 years, so I was lucky to be part of it. The process involved launching cleaning and intelligent pigs into the pipeline. The cleaning pig was used to remove debris and make sure the pipeline was clear for smooth gas flow, while the intelligent pig inspected the pipeline’s condition from the inside using sensors to detect any signs of corrosion or cracks. It was fascinating to learn how these tools work to maintain the pipeline’s health and prevent future issues. I understood how essential it is to regularly inspect and clean the pipelines to ensure they remain safe and reliable.

Beyond these projects, I was also involved in regular maintenance services, which gave me a better understanding of how routine checks and repairs can prevent major breakdowns. I learned how to change filters and service gearboxes, ensuring everything continued to run efficiently. Additionally, I took part in surveillance activities, where we would monitor the pipeline’s surroundings, particularly in the Right of Way (ROW), to check for potential risks like leaks or unauthorized activity. These experiences made me realize how much work goes into ensuring the safety and security of not just the pipeline but the surrounding community as well.

Looking back, these projects gave me hands-on experience with the importance of validation, maintenance, and surveillance in pipeline operations. I now appreciate the teamwork and attention to detail required to keep things running safely. These experiences not only sharpened my technical skills but also taught me valuable lessons about collaboration, problem-solving, and staying calm under pressure.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

Reflecting on my internship at PETRONAS Gas Berhad, I realize just how much I’ve grown, both professionally and personally. This experience allowed me to step into the world of pipeline engineering, working hands-on with real projects and learning how theory from my studies translates into practical work. Initially, it was intimidating—being in a new environment with unfamiliar workflows, but that challenge is what made the experience so rewarding.

I was fortunate to be involved in critical processes like pigging and pipeline maintenance, tasks that felt monumental at first. Working alongside experienced professionals, I learned the importance of precision and attention to detail, whether it was assisting in launching and receiving pigs or performing maintenance to ensure the smooth operation of pipelines. There were moments when I felt out of my depth, especially when trying to grasp the technical complexities of pipeline systems, but those were the moments that pushed me to grow. Asking questions and seeking help wasn’t just an option; it became a necessity. Thankfully, my colleagues were always ready to offer guidance, and that support helped me find my footing. One of the biggest lessons I learned was how essential teamwork is. I saw firsthand how projects can only succeed when everyone contributes their skills and knowledge. Whether it was during high-pressure situations like emergency repairs or routine validations, we worked as a unit, and I came to appreciate the value of collaboration in a way I hadn’t before. This wasn’t just about getting the job done—it was about learning to communicate, to trust others, and to realize that every role is crucial to the bigger picture. This internship wasn’t just a technical learning experience for me; it was a journey of self-discovery. I learned to be more resilient, patient, and confident in my abilities. There were moments of exhaustion, but each task I completed felt like a step forward in my career. More than anything, I now have a clearer sense of what I want to pursue in the future. The experience has not only sharpened my technical skills but also taught me the importance of adaptability and perseverance in a dynamic work environment.

Looking back, I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work at PETRONAS Gas Berhad. The lessons I’ve learned and the connections I’ve made will undoubtedly shape my future, both professionally and personally. It was a challenging journey, but one that I’ll always look back on with a sense of pride and accomplishment.
