Mini Report

The Moon Eclipse Observation is an activity organized by the UTM Astronomy Club. This activity is held on 8 November 2022 in Bangunan Canseleri and Helipad. The activity began with the talk session held by Club Pemeta (Bangunan Canseleri) and followed by the Moon Observation (Helipad) held by UTM Astronomy Club. This program is being planned in order to foster students' astronomical curiosity and get a fundamental grasp of the reasons for lunar eclipses, both of which will aid in the advancement of science in Malaysia.

The graduate attributes that I achieved in this activity are communication skills, thinking skills, and leadership and teamworking skills. In this event, I foster my communication skills during the preparation of the program. The program was initially decided to be held at Balai Cerap UTM, however, the place was closed for the whole month of November. After discussing, we decided to hold the activity at Helipad. We need to ensure effective communication in order to send the information clearly to participants. Besides that, this program also develop my thinking skills as we need to figure out a new place to hold our moon observation activity when we notice the closure of Balai Cerap. Last but not least, I have learned leadership and teamworking skills. As committee member, we need to work together to ensure our activity go well. Also, I need to lead my photography team to take photos of the program.

The activity begin with the talk session by Dato’ Sr Dr. Azhari Bin Mohamed which was held by Club Pemeta. The speaker explained well about the knowledge of astronomy and participants were very interested in the space and universe. They asked a lot of questions to the speaker in the Q&A session. Following that, our activity began, the participants gathered at the Helipad UTM around 7.00 p.m. They used the theodolite to observe the moon with the guide of the helper from club Pemeta. The event ended at around 9.00 p.m. . It was a very exciting event to participate in this program. However, the sad thing was we were unable to observe the moon eclipse as the cloud had blocked our view. The moon in the photo gallery was the photo I took after the moon eclipse activity ended.

Self Reflection

The impact of this activity on the development of graduate attributes is that students are able to develop and strengthen their communication skills, thinking skills, and leadership and teamwork skills. This is because I need to communicate with the committees in the process of preparing this activity including the discussion and decision on the place, date, venue, and work distribution. As the vice secretary of the program, I need to prepare the report of the program together with the secretary, which also improves my communication skills and teamwork skills. Besides that, I also improved my thinking skills when we need to figure out a new place for the activity due to the closure of the Balai Cerap. Moreover, leadership and teamworking skills are also fostered as I need to guide and lead the photography group to take photos of the activity. In conclusion, I learned a lot of soft skills and hard skills when organizing this event. I hoped I will have more chances to organize and participate in more events in the future.

The difficulty I encountered in the activity was we could not see the moon eclipse as our view was blocked by the cloud. I was disappointed as this is my first time organizing a physical program and I was having a high expectations to observe the moon eclipse but it ended up with disappointment. I hope that I had the chance to observe the moon eclipse next time.
