EII Day involved professionals and experts such as academics, researchers, engineers and so on. The professionals and experts share their recent research results, new developments, and technology trend in engineering areas. This program also serves as a platform for exchanging ideas between the professionals and the experts. There was a lot of booths that share their research or new developments. One of the innovation in EII day is Nano-Enabled Membrane for CO² Capture.
REFLECTION
During EII, I met a lot of academicians, researchers, and engineers from academia, industry, and government. They share a lot of knowledge and experiences of them to me that we must acquire before step into society in the future. For instance, I learned a better way of researching, the correct way of presenting products to others and last but not least how to become a successful engineer. These mean a lot to me because I can prepare myself and keep practicing before entering the workplace.
Besides, I saw a lot of interesting and stunning technologies in the exhibition. These technologies are really helpful to people's daily life. I wish I can make something like this and help all human beings to make our life more comfortable and easy.
NALI Exhibitions 2019
New Academia Learning Innovation 2019 (NALI) was held at the FABU UTM Johor Bahru. This is an exhibition that promotes a new framework of teaching and learning. The objectives of this exhibition are recognized NALI research and innovation in teaching and learning through exhibition and competition, to be the platform for sharing of research and innovation in teaching and learning, to enhance educator competency in practicing teaching and learning in the 21st Century through NALI workshops as well as to enhance STEM awareness among educators in practicing NALI. Some of the booths in NALI are Automobile Virtual Reality Module (AVRM), Mobile Learning Apps for Language Listening Skills, CDIO in Improving GIS Traning Camp 1 Implementation, PBL through Agro-STEM and Non-conventional L&T strategies in Soil Mechanics course.
After the visit of NALI exhibitions 2019, we formed a group of 5 students. We do an industry exhibition report on the poster regarding the topic of NALI. The posters that we choose to discuss are:
- PNEUMATIC PROJECTILE MOTION KIT
- THE GAME ABOUT MATHEMATICAL BATTLE INNOVATIVE THINKING (The GAMBIT)
-
The Periodic Table Games For Interactive Learning In Chemistry
We explained the NABC which stands for NEEDS, APPROACHES, BENEFITS, and COMPETITIONS of each poster, the trends in NALI, motivation, and insights on how innovation is used in teaching and learning in our report.
MY ASSIGNMENT
REFLECTION
NALI promoted student-centered learning is the concept that students and teachers interact equally. This type of learning is not just focused on teachers. Student-centered learning is very popular in the 21st century. It will also attract the attention of the students and increase the interest of the student in learning. Compared to teacher-centred learning, students may start to feel bored and lack of interest in learning as it is a type of learning without interaction between students and teachers. The innovations are interesting and fun, the forum in NALI quite impressed me as learning is not only limited in a classroom.
Industry Visit - MAGICX UTM
We have an industry visit to MAGICX, UTM on 6th October 2019. Dr.Wong Lih Fong, who is the manager of MagicX to give us some briefing about this visit and introduction to the MagicX center. There are 5 different sessions in MAGICX which are the 3D printer exhibition, driving car simulation, Kinect Interactive Wall, Virtual Reality (VR) of Oculus Quest and Augmented Reality (AR). Every session explained by the staff of MAGICX in details.
Virtual Reality (VR) Driving Car Simulation
The introduction and details of the visits, detailed descriptions include organization structure, services, achievements, projects that have been developed or maintained by MAGICX of every session, and the reflections after visits are explained in our report.
MY ASSIGNMENT
REFLECTION
First of all, I think Media and Game Innovation Centre of Excellence (MaGICX) is an attractive and exciting place as I saw a lot of digital content inside. All these innovations were very aidful if it can be applied in learning processes in lecture room. This is because students will be more active and willing to learn if the learning environment is more fun and not just listening to lecturer.
Industry Visit - CICT, UTM
On 20th October 2019, we visit the Galerium UTM in Sultanah Zanariah Library(PSZ). There were lots of history components related to computing as shown in the Gallerium, PSZ. Encik Mohd Zahari Bin Zainal Abidin who is the executive officer of the Centre for Information and Communications Technology explained to us the history of the computer and its components. He also explained about the transformation of the components related to computing and how it worked for them in the past.
Motherboard, Floppy Drive, Floppy Disk, Hard-disk, External CD-ROM Drive, and IDE Cable
The report that includes the introduction and details of the visits, detailed descriptions include the history component related to computing as shown in the Gallerium, PSZ and the reflections can be download with the attachment below.
MY ASSIGNMENT
REFLECTION
After the visit to PSZ, I felt very amazed by the knowledge power of the elder generation because they are the ones who made our life more comfortable and easier. Without them, we might still need to bring very big and heavy stuff in order to save our data. But now, we can save it in cloud storage or maybe a thumb drive. Because of knowledge, we human beings can keep evolving and make not only our life but also our descendant's life become more modern and pleasant.
PC Assemble
On 17th November 2019, we carried out a lab activity (Assemble PC) at Makmal Inovasi Perisian, Level 3, N28. We get to know all the components inside a personal computer and how to arrange it properly. Through the lab activity, we also learned about the function of every component inside a PC.
Design Thinking
Design Thinking is a design methodology that provides a solution-based approach to solving problems. Design thinking involves 5 steps: which is empathized, define, ideate, prototype, and test. The topic for our design thinking is “Systems Analysis and Design”. Systems analysis is the process of collecting and interpreting facts, identifying the problems, and decomposition of a system into its components while systems design is the process of planning a new business system or replacing an existing system by defining its components or modules to satisfy the specific requirements.
HOW WE CARRY OUT OUR DESIGN THINKING?
STEP 1: EMPATHY
Interview
- Interview with the project manager
- Interview with programmer
- Interview with client or user
STEP 2: DEFINE
What are the problems that the interviewees have faced?
-
Communications between the project manager, project programmers, and client
-
Hard to trace the progress of the project
-
Running a lot of applications at the same time for a project
STEP 3: IDEATE
Brainstorm process to generate the solution
-
A forum for programmers to connect and communicate with each other in solving a program
-
Templates for common problems and solutions in programming
-
Design an application which combines the functions for multiple applications into a single application
WHAT DID WE CHOOSE?
- CASE-Design an application which combines the functions for multiple applications into a single application
STEP 4: PROTOTYPE

REFLECTION
In the design thinking project, we need to go through every step to helps us develop our critical thinking and making a new project to solve the problem in our topic. In the empathy process, we need to interview the professionals and the user of our project in order to solve the problem from a different perspective. We need to identify the core problem from the interview and the research of our project in the defined process. After we identify the problem, we need to create and generate new ideas and solution to solve the problems. The next thing is we need to generate a prototype which implement the solutions in it before the test process. We meet many problems through these processes. At first, we have no actual ideas to solve the problems. We do a lot of research on it and finally get the ideas. Although we come out with three solutions, we decide to use the solution that can involve more phases in our project. We also test the prototype to the user in order to get feedback that can improve our product.
Through this project, I realize that design thinking is an important process to make our innovation or project go through a smoother process. As a goal to be a computer engineer, it is an important element that we should make good use of it. This skill enables us to develop a project that can fulfill the requirement of the customer.
