Challenge in engineering employment( SKEE 4012)
All final year students that taking subject SKEE 4012 were compulsory to attend the talk that has been organise by faculty on 16 April 2019. The talk held at P19, DK6 and the speaker that have been invited is Ir. Juraimi Masood which also an general manager of project integration division at PTP Gelang Patah. The topic is ‘engineering employment’ which it was to expose final year student about how the engineer work in real life and the journey to become a good engineer. Firstly, he started with the journey of his carrier which he started to work at communication companies which is TM for one and a half year. After that, he continued to study in bachelor of electrical engineering majored in power. Then, he started to work on Tanjung Pelepas construction in 1995. He mentions that engineer field is the field of applied ethic and system of moral principle that applied to the practice of engineering which they should have ethic during complete their task. As an engineer, he highlighted that safety is a must where we need to make sure that all the workers fulfill the safety requirement. He also mentioned that before start the work even during morning gathering with the workers, they will start with safety requirement briefing.
Other than that, depth technical competence in a specific engineering discipline with ability to function effectively as a leader or manager as well as team members. Able to communicate effectively to colleagues and community is skills that an engineer should have to meet the expectation of employee. After that, with having social awareness on sustainable development, able to utilise a system approach to design and evaluate operational performance of system with ability to design and conduct experiment as well a to analyse and interpret data is a great skills for an engineer. Next, engineers or workers have positive view of their employers or manager where they believe that they will share experience with them and willingness to mentor. In fact on the other hand, employers have different view which they feel that employees have unrealistic compensation expectation, poor work ethic and are easily distracted. This statement is according to the research that has been done on perceptions and expectation toward engineering graduates by employees. As a conclusion, being engineers is a big role and responsibilities towards society and the profession which by applying ethics can maintain standard and safety of a project.
