Progress Evaluation 1 : Text Classification for Smart Data Management of Pharmaceutical Labels

Product labelling is not a common thing in pharmaceutical area. In this particular area, medicine and drugs need to be label accurately according to its prescription. But, nowadays' technology still depend on human workforce. The disadvantages of this procedure are time-consuming and energy-draining. So, my supervisor for FYP who is Dr Zaid Omar came across the idea to ease the product labelling process. We agreed to go with this topic which is Pharmaniaga Optical Character Recognition (OCR) & Product labelling.

This project involves a supervisor and two students who is Yap Yang Ming and myself. Dr Zaid divided the topic into two which are Optical Character Recognition (OCR) with Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM) and Text Classification. Yap will be in charge of OCR with SSIM and I will be study on Text Classification.

Week 1

On the first week, I met my supervisor for the first time through Google Meet. I introduced myself and told him about my internship experience. I told Dr Zaid where I completed my practical and what basically I did during my practical. He also tell me about himself which I already knew that his specialization is Digital Signal & Image Processing. He asked about my opinion about his idea for my FYP. He proposed to do the product labelling involving Pharmaniaga. At the first, place I am very interested into that topic as I understood clearly the explanation from Dr Zaid. We agreed to take this topic and work together for upcoming FYP.

Week 2

On the second meeting with my supervisor, Dr Zaid told me about the motivation and literature review for our project. He asked me to find more about OCR and Text Classification. Also, he told to look at the logistics management supply chain which relates to the pharmaceutical branch. For the literature review, he advised me to find more information on keyword related to OCR and Text Classification. He also let me to borrow one of the thesis from past year student for references.

Week 3

I found more information related to OCR and Text Classification through the Internet. I even went to the library to find books about OCR and Classification. I tried to find as much references that I could so that there will be more resources to look at. In order to understand about logistics management supply chain, I found a video on Youtube explaining about the flow of the whole process.

Week 4

On the next meeting, I presented every finding I manage to find. I told everything about logistics management, supply chain, medicine prescription labels and did summarize on my thesis reading. Logistics defines as movement of materials in whole supply chain. Supply chain describes about transforming a raw material into products and how to distribute to the customers. Logistics function consists of 4 factors which are transportation,  warehousing, 3rd and 4th party logistics and reverse logistics. Transportation tells about how the movement of goods of supply chain. Warehouse is a place where to receive, store and ship the goods. Third and fourth party logistics function to manage one or more services and also as logistics specialist. Reverse logistics is also important as we need to know about how the backward flow of logistics management works. Other than that, I found medicine prescription labels such as name of medicine, dosage, manufacturer of the medicine, manufacturer and expiry date of the medicine. We discussed on my progress. Dr Zaid specified my task by finding information about Automated Text Classification. He shared with me some thesis to be read and find information. He asked me to take a look at the coding part for the Text Classification using Matlab. For the coding, he wanted me to classify the prescription labels such as Name, Dosage, Manufacturer, and Expiry Date. 

Week 5

I continued my research on text classification. I scrolled various websites regarding text classification. I wanted to know about the origin of text classification and how it works. I also take a look at the application of text classification on daily basis. At the same time, I read the thesis that Dr Zaid shared with me. The thesis was from past Computer Engineering student. I searched for text classification coding. For this project, I will be using Matlab. I found some coding based on text classification. But, I am not sure whether it is useful or not. I will share it with my supervisor to ask for his opinion.
