Industrial talk #5 : Smart Campus: The journey starts here

Speaker: Mr Goh Bih Der (Systems Engineer of Commscope company)

This talk was about the network infrastructure that is commonly used in the market nowadays and about the smart campus.

  • Network infrastructure

Network infrastructure is made up of hardware and software, systems and devices which enables computing and communication between users, services, applications and processes. To build a network infrastructure, we need network hardware such as wireless routers, switches, LAN cards, and cables. Firstly, the wireless routers will connect the devices to the access point through IoT protocol or wireless protocol, then the access point or switches will connect to the core switches in the data center by cable. The Internet is now ready to access.

  • Wi-Fi 6

Wi-Fi 6 is also called as 802.11 ax and it is the latest network technology in the market. Wi-Fi 6 technology can increase the efficiency on data transmission and uploading and downloading speed. It has the OFDMA and MU-MIMO technology that helps to improve the network capacity and allows the access point to communicate with multiple devices, Target Wake Time (TWT) that helps to extend the device battery life and reduce battery usage on IoT devices such as smart locks, smart refrigerators, smart bicycles and fitness trackers. The technology of 1024-QAM and Long OFDM symbol used in Wi-Fi 6 will allow users to upload, download or transfer larger size files while BSS colouring functions to reduce the interference that is caused by the congestion and guarantee reliable service to multiple connected devices in high-density environments. Examples of devices using the technology of Wi-Fi 6: iPhone 11, Huawei P40 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S10, PlayStation 5 etc.

  • Multigigabit Technology

Multigigabit technology helps users to solve the ‘Bottleneck’ problems so that users are allowed to attain greater bandwidth over old version of ethernet cable like Cat 5e or above especially in high-density areas, because the core can always go busy, but the multigigabit technology can lower down the stress of the core because it contains core switches of 40 or 100 GbE and grants port speed increase up to 2.5 or 5 GbE. The multigigabit technology helps to optimize Wi-Fi through switching by increasing the network speed and traffic without the need of a complete legacy wiring infrastructure replacement.

  • Unified Network Management

When there exist multiple access points and multiple switches, the network controller can help to manage all the access points and switches one time. This helps to reduce time and energy on managing the networks, decrease operating costs, increase availability, improve agility, enhance security and accelerate the adoption of intent-based networking compared to the old way.

  • Cloud analytic

Cloud analytic is a form of data analytics in which data are stored and processed in a public or private Cloud. It requires the use of scalable cloud computing with powerful analytic software to investigate patterns in data and to give new insights. The cloud analytics is associated with artificial intelligence (AI), deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML). It helps to automate business processes, provides cognitive insights through data analysis and interact with customers using natural language processing. When the amount of data collected increase at staggering rates, cloud analytic become more popular and important in the market as it is much easier to deploy and does not require maintenance of physical hardware, reducing cost and energy.

  • Smart campus

The smart campus is a combination of smart cities and smart homes. It uses advanced network infrastructure and internet-connected devices to provide supportive and amazing experiences to users. Smart campus improves student experiences in terms of smart living, smart learning and smart screening with the help of IoT devices. Smart living provides services like Smart ID cards, in-building LTE, smart lighting, smart parking, wayfinding, personal networks and internet protocol television (IPTV), while smart learning enables students to have flexible learning spaces and improve the experiences of distance learning by having virtual labs, lecture capture function and online library. Smart safety helps to enhance the security and safety of the campus by having smart CCTV, smart door locks and sensors everywhere on the campus.
