The following page contains my thoughts on all the project tasks and my overall learning experience from all project tasks combined.

Reflection on all Project Tasks

I am the group leader of the group CATS. Our group objective is to give it our best to complete the tasks provided in high quality.

 

My contribution to the group is mainly coming up with the agenda of the minute meetings, recording the matters discussed in every meeting and running a final check for the report of every task alongside with my group members. For Project Task 1, I worked on designing the layout for the Ground floor of the floor plan. I also discussed with the other group members to minimize error within the floor plan. For Project Task 2, I am in charge of coming up with some questions that would impact how my group members and I would plan the networking system. I am also responsible for finding the answers to my own questions and writing the feasibility study. For Project Task 3, I am in charge of finding information on basic components of the network system and do research on the main switches. I assisted Syahmi in doing comparison between two brands of switches. For Project Task 4, I am in charge of identifying the work areas in the floor plan and planning the amount of subnets required with my group members. I am also required to calculate the total wiring used for the work area I am in charge of. For Project Task 5, I am in charge of splitting the IP addresses across all subnets made in the floor plan. I work with Taufiq on this part.

 

The first team member, Ammar bin Jamalludin. He is very cooperative when it comes to working with other team members and comes up with ideas when in discussions. The second team member, Muhammad Taufiq bin Jurimi and Muhammad. He is very hard working and very supportive of other group members’ work. The third team member, Syahmi Bin Saleh is also very cooperative when it comes to group work and he tries his best to attend every minute meeting despite his busy schedule. For Project Task 1, all group members and I come up with different designs of the floor plan and a vote is made to pick out the best one. After the vote, Ammar and I worked on the design of the Ground Floor while Taufiq and Syahmi worked on the design of the First Floor. For Project Task 2, all team members are tasked to come up with at least 2 questions alongside the answers. All the answers are also discussed among the group to ensure the questions are answered properly. Taufiq and Syahmi helped me with the writing of the feasibility study. For Project Task 3, all team members are required to do research on one or two network devices of their choice. Taufiq also did extra research on the components that were potentially overlooked during the first discussion. Syahmi and Ammar did comparison for two brands of the router. For Project Task 4, all team members do the network wiring of each work area identified in the floor plan and also calculate the total length of wiring used for each work area. For Project Task 5, Taufiq worked with me in splitting the IP address across the subnet while Ammar and Syahmi worked together to assign the IP address to their respective subnets.

 

Whenever a project task is given, I come up with tasks and split the work equally among all team members. I will instruct a final checking with my group members to minimize errors in the reports. What I mainly learned from working in a group is I have to adapt to working with different people. Every group member is different by nature and attitude. Thus, I have to act accordingly so that I can maintain the harmony within the group to not discourage any group members from doing their part. I also realize the importance of working in a group as each task in the project will become more manageable.

 

Throughout all the project tasks, I mainly learned how to apply the knowledge I gained in Network Communication classes in a simulated work environment. In Project Task 1, even though it is more focused toward the architecture side of things, Network Communication knowledge is vital in this task as every piece of equipment needs to be placed inside the floor plan in mind of a networking system. In Project Task 2, I have learnt on how to figure out the questions necessary in constructing a networking system, not just blindly search the answers to questions that would not contribute to planning of a networking system. In Project Task 3, I have learnt how to identify the network devices which make up a networking system and how to make use of the budget provided to not order too much or too little of a single network device. In Project Task 4, I have learnt on how to do the wiring efficiently for every work area in the floor plan. I also learnt how to properly calculate the length of wiring required for a work area and making an appropriate amount of subnets.In Project Task 5, I am required to learn how to split the IP addresses provided by the stakeholder among the subnets that are made in Task 4 using methods taught in class. The method used for Task 5 is splitting IP addresses according to the needs of each subnet as splitting IP addresses equally to all subnets is not suitable after discussion.

In my opinion, the project serves as an effective method to study Network Communication and its application in society. The project simulates a scenario where I as a student have to work in the shoes of a contractor and also in a group to fulfill a contract made with the stakeholder. Not only I noticed that there are a lot of considerations needed to be made when completing the projects, discussion with group members and information gathering skills has become essential in the completion of these projects. If I have to suggest improvements to the projects, maybe provide some hints on the more granular parts of a networking system in Project Task 3. Overall, all the project tasks are presented in a suitable manner where it will guide the students in designing a complete networking system.
