Mini Report

Malaysian Youth Bioinformatics Symposium 4.0 (MYBS 4.0) is a program organized by the bioinformatics students of Multimedia University (MMU), Melaka. It was held on 24 September 2022 with a time duration of about 9 hours, from 9 am to 6 pm. Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the program was being conducted online through a virtual platform of Google Meet. We are able to obtain further latest information and details through email. The speakers of this program are Dr Pan Jia Wern, Dr Ho Weang Kee and Professor Qasim Ayub. We have workshops before the program ends as well. My workshop instructor is Dr Tee Connie. The lesson of the program is about learning bioinformatics related issues in terms of diseases, concepts and coding.

There are several graduate attributes that can be found in this program. For instance, the graduate attributes that can be cultivated are communication skills, thinking skills and adaptability. Communication skills can be found in this program as I ought to voice out my opinions and ask my doubts to either the speakers or workshop instructor. In addition, this program enables me to nurture my thinking skills as well. This is because there is a great deal of new knowledge to me as a Bioinformatics student. Hence, I can definitely learn knowledge which is highly related to my course. Furthermore, adaptability is also one of the key attributes available in this program. From the program, I have to catch up with what the speakers told and practice what the speakers and workshop instructor taught on the spot.

The achievement that I can get from this program is I learn a lot of new knowledge that I have never gained before in my study life. It is a new experience to me and I have also learned the expert system from the handouts given. Moreover, the symposium mainly focuses on explaining breast cancer, with how it affects us and the findings related with breast cancer. According to Dr Pan Jia Wern, breast cancer consists of HER2+, TP53 mutations and immune cells. We also study breast cancer prediction with the development of Asian breast cancer from Dr Ho Weang Kee. The result shows that breast cancer in Asia is increasing with the five-year survival rate in Malaysia for breast cancer is about 49%. Besides, Professor Qasim Ayub explained about adaptive variation in Asian populations.

Reflection

In my opinion, this symposium has brought a lot of positive impacts to me especially in terms of graduate attributes such as the communication skills, thinking skills as well as adaptability as I have stated before. Communication occurs as each of the sessions contain an Q&A activity, enabling all the participants to ask questions related to that specific session. I can also develop my thinking skills through the program. This is due to the reason that the symposium leads me to think and investigate the topics involved in the program. Additionally, adaptability skills can be obtained in this symposium as well. I think that I can adapt well with what the information that the speakers and workshop instructors want to deliver to us.

The advantages towards the activity are that I have learned about the new knowledge that I have never learnt before. This is in light of the fact that the symposium contains several interesting topics such as machine learning and precision medicine for Asian breast cancer, polygenic risk scores for breast cancer risk prediction as well as mapping adaptive variation in Asian populations while the workshop that I joined in this symposium is workshop 1 with the title of AI and Bioinformatics: A Better Future. I have learnt a lot and have a better understanding of this course, Bioinformatics. In my point of view, I have been acknowledged about the studies of Bioinformatics through the symposium.

It is undeniable that there are some challenges to be faced when participating in this symposium. In my perspective, I think that I have achieved my goals of knowing what the symposium is about and learning the information through the program. I can also solve and overcome the challenges that I faced, which is unsure about the content of the program and less understanding of the main focuses of topics. For instance, I am able to do pre-reading and prepare myself with the tools needed before the symposium starts. This enables me to have a brief understanding of the content of the symposium so that I would not be confused when the program was undergoing.
