1st Meeting (19 Sep 2019 - Wed)
Today was my first time meeting with my FYP supervisor, Dr. Mohamad Hidayat bin Jamal alongside my two friends who also under the same lecturer. Dr. Hidayat is a friendly and serious senior lecturer who serves the Department of Water and Environmental Engineering, School of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, UTM.
We had a quite long conversation about the final year project and the concept of researching and study on engineering field. Dr. Hidayat told us to relax a bit as we were quite anxious about deciding what to study. Therefore, he gave us exactly two weeks to think about the area of study that we want, not the exact topic, but something like studying the river, water consumption, rainfall or anything related to water.
Objective(s) until the next meeting:
1. Think of any preferred area of study.
2nd Meeting (2 Oct 2019 - Wed)
It was finally the time to decide my interest area of study for my final year project which is about water consumption. During the meeting with my supervisor, Dr. Hidayat, I told him that I want to pursue my research study about water consumption analysis, so he proposed to me the idea to do analysis about water consumption in an old housing area where I should be doing a survey or distributing questionnaires to the house owners to collect data which is the average water bill. Then, from the water bill, I can estimate the water consumption from each house and compare the water demand from the design guideline of Syarikat Air Johor Sdn. Bhd.
Getting back to my college, I start working on my final year project to do research on what I should do, my objectives, my methods and so on.
Objective(s) until the next meeting:
1. Focus on understanding the topic.
2. Do Chapter 1 and discuss it with my supervisor.
3rd Meeting (11 Nov 2019 - Mon)
I presented my short proposal to my supervisor. The title was a simple one which was "Analysis on Water Demand". There were many mistakes such as the introduction in Chapter 1 about water resource should be changed to water consumption and demand. He guided me and re-explained the scope that I should be doing on and not misleading to the wrong route. He also told me to change my scope from analyzing water consumption on the housing areas to shophouses in Taman Universiti. I needed to redo my Chapters 1 and 2 as I was off the scope. As for Chapter 3, my methodology was fine but still needed more changes because I will be analyzing water consumption on shophouses instead of the housing area.
I will redo my work as now, I fully understand the concept of my own study. With the objectives stated below, these will be my guide to do my final year project,
- To conduct and analyze a survey on shophouses.
- To analyze water consumption for different types of shophouses.
- To compare the water consumption for the shophouses and the water demand from design guidelines.
Below is the water demand design guideline which I will compare the actual water consumption with and also the water tariff for my study.
Objective(s) until the next meeting:
1. Make a better understanding of the new scope of the study.
2. Mend the whole chapters according to the comments given in the meeting.
4th Meeting (20 Nov 2019 - Wed)
I finished my full proposal for chapters 1, 2 and 3 within a week after the last meeting. My title was "Water Consumption Analysis on Shophouses in Taman Universiti." Same concept with my previous work which doing analysis on water consumption but now, on shophouses. Shophouses in Taman Universiti have many different types of business conducted which may contribute to a lower or higher water consumption per month. For example, a restaurant or a car wash may consume more water per month than a typical retail shop. There are so many rooms for improvements in my final year project for Semester 1 2019/2020.
Below is the map of my study area which is located in Taman Universiti.
Objective(s) until the next meeting:
1. Chapter 2 - Literature Review needs to be improved before the evaluation.
Checking with Evaluator (27 Nov 2019 - Wed)
Today I met my final year project evaluator, Prof Dr. Sobri bin Harun, a very kind and gives a composing vibe to people around him. When I was presenting my idea and my final year project to him, I felt at ease as he was constantly smiling and fully engaging throughout the communication.
He asked me to explain every detail of the work, every chapter. He also sounded satisfied with my work as my supervisor. Throughout the evaluation, he also asked for my biodata, my vision and my career path. The whole 20 minutes of my evaluation seems like an exciting and engaging conversation with Prof. Sobri. A very nice session, indeed.
5th Meeting (1 Dec 2019 - Sun)
I forgot to asked my supervisor for his signature before meeting with my evaluator. He already approve to let me do my evaluation but I forgot to get his signature.
So, today I met my supervisor for him to sign my evaluation form. He also asked how was my evaluation went and I told him it was a really great session with Prof. Dr. Sobri bin Harun as he was really satisfied with my work and my explanation.
6th Meeting (19 Dec 2019 - Thu)
Today, for the last time for this semester, I met my supervisor, Dr. Hidayat to submit my Final Year Project Semester 1 2019/2020.
I never felt satisfied with my work because I want to improve it more. But, Dr. Hidayat said to me it is okay to submit first because he was already satisfied with my work, if I want to strengthen my work, I can just do it in the next semester as I go through chapter 4 and 5.
In the end, I submitted my work and really proud of myself. All is well. Alhamdulillah. I hope I can improve my work in the next semester, insyaAllah.
Objective(s) until the next meeting:
1. Try to improve on Chapter 3 - Methodology to smoothen the survey process in the next semester.
