Before our first match of the day against a team called Team Secret about to start, my team felt pretty nervous and anxious. There is so much going on inside our heads. We are so afraid of losing our first match and get eliminated straightway. It would be devastating for us because we have used most of our spare time training and getting better at the game. As the leader of the team, I told them not to worry about losing but instead, we just thinking about having fun and have a good time together because after all, we are going to make it through together and climb our way up as a team.
This is not my first tournament so I have a little bit of experience handling such a situation before. I need to make sure that my team is mentally prepared and ready to stay focus in-game no matter how hard our opponent would be. During our first match against Team Secret, we manage to secure the first victory for our team. It was best of 3 round elimination which the first team manage to get 2 wins will win the match. In my opinion, the first team was pretty easy for us to take on as they were making a lot of mistakes that they shouldn’t do. My team was happy to secure the win at the first stages but I told them the fight is not over yet. We need to stay focus on track and never let looks down on our opponent. After a short break, we went to the second stage. This time, we will fight against team Maruda. One of the players from the team is also my friend that I have played together before. The good thing is he is the leader of the team so I should be able to have some ideas on what to expect from the enemy team. This reminds me of the time when we both play together back when I was in the first year in UTM. Again, I and my team managed to win the match fairly easily because I think I have a slight advantage over them. It was a good moment until we had to face the next team in the semi-final round.
This time, we are up against one of the best teams in UTM called MonkeyBusiness. In my opinion, I think that their team’s name suits them very well as they are pretty difficult to handle. My team had a pretty good run before this after winning against 2 other teams which will make them a little bit cocky on our next match. We lose the first round pretty badly against those teams. On top of that, one of my teammates Izzat started arguing with Hafiz as they both felt the pressure given by our opponent. They were started to yell and blaming each other for each and every mistake that they did. In my mind, I have to do something about it before it is going out of hand and will cost us the game. I tried to calm both of them by giving a little bit of motivation and show them the bigger picture of the match. If we keep blaming each other like that, it would not bring us any good and just drag us down to the losing pit. Finally, Izzat and Hafiz had agreed to play as a team and understanding each other very well. It was a miracle that we won the round and the next one in just a blink of an eye. For me, that was the most important moment of the entire event as it shows that we stick as a team, we would make it through together.
After securing the win at the semi-final, we finally up against Exodious in the final. I knew very well that this was the best team in the UTM. I told them not to think too much about it and let us focus on the game itself. Our opponent gave us a good fight but with a little bit of miracle, we managed to come on top of them and be the champion at the tournament. I could not believe that we made it as a team and did not let our guard down. We managed to handle the situation very well and be matured about all the things that we done. The key important thing here is communication and understanding with each other. Never doubt your teammate’s abilities and judge them from one action instead, give them the opportunity to prove themselves to be better and correct if they were wrong.
In-game planning was also important in securing the win as it shows that we were prepared to handle most of the situation.
After joining this event, I gain that if we are the leader in the team, either team in sport or e-sport, we shall try can lead them since a team is a group of different people having different skills. There might be a team member who may not be able to communicate fluently or uncomfortable talking in front of the team. Being kind with the team would help the leaders to find those hidden talents. Also, be an optimistic leader who will look for an opportunity even in a difficult situation. He or she would never quit even the situation is worst or going against the plan. It’s essential for the leader to have this quality as it would boost up the entire team to work positively towards the common goal. Next, we should encourage other people to talk and be a good active listener. People want to be heard, really heard, and not patronized. Oftentimes, instead of listening to someone in a conversation, people are really just waiting for an opportunity to speak. If this is an area where you struggle, one trick is to say “What I understand you’re saying is…” By repeating what you understand the other person to be saying, it forces you to really listen to what they are saying. And as a side benefit, it reinforces to the speaker that you truly are listening to them and respect what they have to say.
Effective team leaders ensure that team morale remains high and teammates are motivated to perform well. Leaders can also affect morale by creating an environment of cooperation between team members so that they work together to achieve team objectives instead of only fulfilling individual goals. We should complement one another when teammates have done something good or performing well and keep the lines of communication open as teammates strive to meet new objectives. Even if the role is hard to carry, try to focus on the positives. It is a very useful method of learning and developing new skills.
Finally, being the team leader itself carry a lot of responsibility in our shoulder as it requires us to make critical decision making for the sake of the team. Every action and call during the gameplay will have a great impact on the remaining duration of the gameplay. It will decide whether the graph is going up or down depending on the action that we took at the moment. It was crucial for the leader to stay focus and does not make a personal action or feelings against the opponent as it will make the situation harder. Although do not be afraid of losing because from losing, we will gain more and more experience and equip us with current knowledge to be utilized for even better outcomes in the upcoming future. I have learned a lot from this particular event as it changes the way I look at my teammates from different perspectives and try to understand them.
