FYP ENTRY 1

On the first week, I met my supervisor which is Dr Zaharah Binti Johari. We had been discussed about what the things that I want to do. I also told her that my focused was on microelectronic and I’m not interested in doing something to do with coding and hardware. At first Dr suggested me to do with nanosheet, until Dr found a journal about spintronic. Spintronic are still new as for the past 5 years, researchers had started to discovered about the advantages and disadvantages of spintronic.

Moore Law states that the number of transistors on a silicon chips will roughly double every 18 months. Integrated circuit are everywhere and as technology advanced, silicon chips are reaching their limits. In addition, we are now have reached into nanoscale dimension. Researchers had found that spintronic can solve these limitations.

In journal that Dr gave, Graphene was a famous material and they patterned Zigzag graphene nanoribbon (ZGNR) form graphene sheets. It has proven that 8-ZGNR can be a potential candidature for integrating logic operations and digital storage for digital spin-based electronics.

Finally, Dr Zaharah and I have come into decision that I will do about phosphorene for spintronic application. Therefore, that was how I got a title for my Final Year Project (FYP). My project was fully about simulation and I will be using software Quantum Atomistix Tool Kit (Quantum ATK) tools from synopsys to help me. This software QuantumATK is new for me and the best parts were this software has provided tutorials.

I loved how Dr always remind me that your hard work will be paid off. That gave me strength to work hard in completing this research. I usually find reading materials from UTM Open e-journals, Student’s Thesis, or from website such as Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and IEEE Explore.

Talking about problems, firstly in order to understand the software, I have to discover and try the tutorials where it does takes time longer than I expected. After that, I had difficulty where the tutorials that I was following is not showing the same result as the tutorials have shown. Lastly, I blamed myself for not commit 100% the day before I flew to Japan.
