PROGRAM REPORT

COPE’22, more commonly known as Connecting People with Nature 2022 was a hybrid program that was organized by Kolej Tun Dr Ismail Student Committee. This program was held to give UTM students better exposure to the environment and ways to implement Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that have been stated by the Economic Planning Unit, Prime Minister’s Department to make this earth a better place and develop the same goals as our country. The program was led by a college committee member, Miss Shomya Sri A/P Sinnathamby, and was assisted by several program advisors. The main purpose of this program is to increase awareness and also knowledge about appreciating plants and animals.  On 14th May, various physical activities were held at Kolej Tun Dr Ismail involving volunteers from all UTM colleges.

This program proved to be beneficial not only to UTM’s students but also to the whole community where in this program we had a lot of sessions of talk that will increase our knowledge of plants and animals. This program was held by using the WebEx Online meeting as an online platform, and for the physical activity, Kolej Tun Dr Ismail and also at Taman Negara Tanjung Piai. This program started on 8 May 2022 and ended with a closing ceremony on 4 June 2022. This program was attended by our collaborators which are the Malaysia Nature Society (MNS), as well as World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and also participants from various colleges in UTM and other universities.

CONNECTING PEOPLE WITH NATURE 2022 (COPE’22)

This event was conducted to improve myself as a participant as the event included some activities such as an aerobic session at the opening session, planting some plants and watering the plants. The aerobic session helps me to prepare my body and relax my muscles so that I can actively participate during the event that requires the volunteers to use their strength to move around. From this, I am able to perform in good condition while having fun doing the aerobic moves during the opening session. The volunteers also divided into groups to plant the trees, so I have learned a lot about the team working skills such as how to communicate well with teammates, next steps that we should do within the group and many more. I also increase my adaptability skills as I always make sure that I understand my teammates commands while we work and do the steps in planting as required.

The Challenge that I faced during the program is that I am not quite familiar with the steps of planting trees. Thus, at first it is difficult for us to understand the manual given and decide how to plant trees in the correct way. Luckily, we have the organizer with the committees that help us by guiding us and hep whenever we don't understand the steps. I have faced some difficulties as the natural environment is quite dangerous for us because we could be attacked by some animal but thankfully we didn't get int any trouble and safely did the activities during the event.
