Industrial Training

Week 1

Week 1

11th June 2019

First meeting. Brief introduction on ACTS Smart Solutions Sdn. Bhd. by the company's Managing Director, Dr. Mohd Khairi Abu Husain. The three of us who will be doing out internship here were given three projects namely Ocean Clean-Up, Tidal Turbine and Wave Energy Converter (WEC). We were given one week to decide on which project that each of us will be doing for our internship.

First meeting

12th June 2019

Did some reading on Ocean Energy and Wave Energy. There are two types of Ocean Energy which are mechanic and thermal. The rotation of the Earth produces wind on the ocean surface which then produce waves. Meanwhile, the gravitational pull of the Moon produces coastal tides and currents. Main forms of Ocean Energy are waves, tides, marine currents, salinity gradient and temperature gradient. Wave Energy are generated by the movement of a device either floating on the surface of the ocean or moored to the ocean floor. The energy created depends on the speed, height and frequency of the wave, as well as water density.

In the afternoon, Dr. Khairi explained to us the steps involved in doing a research.  There are five main parts when doing a research: research problem, literature review, methodology, data analysis and conclusion & reference. Each part will be further explained below.

Research Problem

  • Improvements to be made from existing projects
  • Consists of: specific problem and aims & research objectives (RO)

Literature Review

  • Development on research problem . Explain generally on solutions that have been made previously and then focus on the problem.
  • Methodology and theoretical involved (equations, parameters, model, etc.)

Methodology

  • Research flowchart
  • Research methods (existing technology & proposed technology)
  • Must have scientific reasons

Data Analysis

  • Statistical analysis of the result

13th June 2019

Chosen WEC project to be done throughout the internship. Did some reading on the research background and the project proposal. Prepared PowerPoint presentation for tomorrow's progress meeting.

In the project proposal, the prospective location is One Fathom Bank which is located in the Straits of Malacca, about 23 nautical miles from Port Klang. The existing lighthouse uses diesel powered generators. The diesel usage is 120 litres per day for three generators with 100kW power. The cost of electricity bill is RM261.60 per day.

The PowerPoint presentation prepared includes research background, problem statement, objectives and Gantt Chart.
