TITLE: : The Sciences of Marathon Running.

The purpose of this project:

- investigate whether there is a relationship between the impact of recent Nike running shoes, the distance ran per weeks, geographical area of runners and their marathon running performances.

  • By conducting this project, we are able to know what the relationships between these variables are and how they may affect each other.
  • The outcome of this project can be used as a general reference for semi-elite runners whose curious for faster running times for marathon or other long distance event.
  • Several statistical tests are conducted to estimate the relationship between each of the

variables.

METHODOLOGY:

  • Dataset used in this project is obtained from Kaggle website, IAAF official website, official Berlin Marathon website and Strava fitness tracking apps.
  • Population of dataset: More than thousands.
  • 4 sets of sample data with sample size of 30 were randomly selected from the population.
  • There are various variables that affect running performance such as VO2 max, wind, temperature, altitude, running surface and lots more.
  • 5 variables used in the project.

STATISTICAL TEST:

  1. Hypothesis Testing for 2 samples.
  2. Correlation Analysis.
  3. Regression Analysis.
  4. Chi Square Test of Independence.

All calculation and done by using R studio.

What have you learned from all activities done in Project 2 (choosing dataset, pre-processing and analysis process etc.)?

We have learned quite a lot of things from all the activities done in project 2, things such as having to select a group of data and be able to state results based on calculations performed on the dataset. We exposed to the practical way of carrying out various statistical tests on our favorite topic and applying the knowledge of inferential statistics. We also get to learn basics of R programming language that we deemed important in our future career.

Lastly I would like to give special thanks to my lecturer Dr. Azurah binti A Samah. She is so supportive and explained the project so nicely. And thanks to all of my groupmates who worked really hard on this.
