At the starting of Energy Balance course, I have a feeling that it will be a hard course. We were introduced to a whole new concepts on how to calculate enthalpy, adiabatic reactions, heat of reactions and many more.
As usual, throughout the course, there are many tests and quizzes. Through these tests and quizzes, I always make sure that I write down the basis and reference conditions. This proves that I have mastered CO1! Other than that, in energy balance test and quizzes, we were also required to recall back mass balance. I also have understand CO2 which is the ability to calculate mass balance on single or multiple units. Throughout the course, I have also learned CO3 and CO4, which is the ability to solve energy balance with respect to temperature and pressure and the ability to calculate the standard heat of reaction using multiple methods. This is all made possible with the patient guidance and help of our beloved lecturer, Dr. Aznizam! I was also able to develop Process Flow Diagram with mass and energy balances calculations (CO5).
During test 1, I got really bad results, which really discouraged me. I understand the questions and the way of calculations, but during the test, I tend to get to tensed and make careless mistakes, which cost me a lot of marks. No matter what, I always remembered to write down the basis, reference state and the process flow diagram, as it is a free 5 marks. During test 2, I did slightly better. But, I still do careless mistakes such as substituting the wrong value or keying the value wrongly in calculator. So stressed. Luckily, I managed to score in my third test. Maybe part of it is because that it was quite easy in Part A, so I had more time to check my answers to prevent careless mistakes. But I think that the quizzes in classes help me get a better understanding on the topic involved. The mini project at the end of the semester is quite challenging and it requires a lot of effort to complete it. Overall, I felt that the quizzes and mini project can help us improve our understanding on energy balance.
All in all, energy balance can be quite an easy subject, as long as we put in effort. Do not panic during test and exams is a must as it may cause us to make careless mistakes. So, I will put in hard work and try my best to score in this challenging subject. Hopefully I can get an A in this subject!
