Softening point (ring and ball) test is a method for the determination of the softening point of bitumen and bituminous binders, in the range 30 °C to 150 °C. Softening point test measures the temperature at which asphalt specimen discs in the apparatus soften to the point they can no longer support the weight of the 3.5g steel balls. Softening tests can indicate, in part, the likelihood of the material rutting or sliding.
