- Mini Report
This mega townhall takes place on February 26th and the guest is YBRS DR. Zaid Omar who is the Director of Student Development Sector Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education Malaysia. There are thousands of students in townhall this time. All the seats are filled with students who are curious about this student's union. The Mega Townhall is intended to provide students with an explanation of the Students' Union which will replace the Student Representative Council. The townhall began with a speech and presentation from Dr Zain Omar himself. He talks about the history of student unions and how student union unions are implemented in other countries such as the UK. The student union model that wants to be implemented in Malaysia is taken from the overseas model because it is more systematic and highlights student empowerment. The townhall ends with a question posed by students to Dr Zaid. Among the questions is the effectiveness of this student’s union in promoting student empowerment.
- Self-Reflection
What I have gained from this event is that if this student's union is implemented at UTM, it will increase student power. Student representatives are entitled to be present at every meeting involving student affairs such as fees, hostels and other facilities. This will enable these representatives to voice their views on student affairs and further enhance student productivity at UTM. In addition, students will be able to enhance their leadership skills if they join this student's union. This is because the student's union involves all the associations, clubs, student organizations and is placed under one union.
