ARIFFA ILYANA BINTI ZAINOL ABIDIN's Reflection /
REFLECTION OF WEBINAR 'OPPORTUNITIES AND STRATEGIES IN CRISIS' by CAPTAIN CYRANO

From the Program of Captain Cyrano Talk (A Perspective of a Pilot Survivor of an Aviation Disaster), I would say that it was a sad incident that happened to Captain Cyrano and team on 31st October 2000. The accident involved flight SQ006/SIA006 from Singapore Changi Airport to Los Angeles International Airport via Taiwan.

The impact from the unfortunate event really affect his life as he had been terminated from flying. Captain Cyrano did not go back flying for almost 10 years. In this ten years, he did any ground job he could get his hands on to support his family. Talking about the crash did not soother his wounds initially. Eventually he gets better at it, he starts opening up to people about the crash he was involved in. He starts giving talk on post-impact support for survivors. He has guilt from escaping the crash but also grateful for the life that has been given to him.

So what I get from the Captain Cyrano talked was when you deal with unfortunate event that make you traumatized, all you need is a good support to recover. You will need an army to console you but you will have to let this army gets to you first. With the amount of the support given make you have the courage to move on and get a better life. In captain Cyrano life after tragic scenario, his wife always be with him when he had to deal with hateful moment when some people blame him for the tragedy. He gets stronger by day and accepted the faith and he did it beautifully.

He now makes a comeback to fly again. He managed to deal with his black history and came out with strategies such as he chose the right mix of channels, provide a simple and clear rationale, focus on solutions and he showed goodwill as well. He handled the crisis very well and he is a competence man that still get involved with the airlines after the crisis. You could have stop him and ask of his story and be moved by it. I know, because I was moved by the courage and strength he has to continue with life.
