Reflection
My first impression towards the subject of Principal of Chemical Processes is that it is one of the very important subjects for my degree as it is the required subject to proceed with others subjects in the coming years. Besides that our seniors also advised us not to take this subject lightly as what we can learned from this subject is will be used heavily later throughout our degree years and future in our career. Thus, when I first started the class i was worried that i will not be able to cope with the subject. However, with the systematic teaching of the subject parts by parts I'm able to understand the concept of the subject although it is still consider difficult for me.
In the starting of the course, Our lecturer, Dr Nazlee Faisal introduced the course outcome of the course which provide us a clear direction on what we will do for the rest of our semester. The date line and the course outline was followed precisely making us more prepare for the learning of new topic. Throughout the semester we have covered the topics as follow:
1) Unit conversions
It is crucial in the rest of the topics especially when the problems invovled values with different units. We have learned this in our first semester in the subject Introduction to Engineering however in this subject, Principle of Chemical Processes we learned to apply what we've learn in solving the problems or question
2) Mass Balance
It include different types of systems and we learnt how to analysed and calculate the material in the input and output using different techniques based on the questions. These techniques include sketching the flow of system, stoichiometry equation, atomic balance, molecular balance, extent of the reaction and many more other tecniques. The tricky parts in these topics is not about memorising the formula but most of the time is failed to understand what the problems or question really want.
3) Single phase and Multiphase
We learnt about liquid and solid densities, standard temperature and pressure, ideal gas mixture, equation of states for non- ideal gases, and compressibility factor equation of state for non- ideal gases.and single-component phase equilibrium, the gibbs phase rule, one condensable component and multicomponent gas-liquid system. We also learnt how to check the given tables in our textbook to obtain the correct information we need to solve these questions based on the given information.
4) Energy balance
We learnt about energy balance in the last part of our course. We covered open and closed system and learnt to extract the information from the question to apply in the formula. Same like the mass balance the hardest part in this chapter is to understand what the problems or question really want.
By completing the course I've learnt various techniques to solve problems related to the chemical processes. However to be good at this course i will have to do more exercises and practices as only by having strong concept and understanding we are able to master this subject.
