For 12 weeks of MJIIT’s Industrial Training in 2018, I was offered to undergo my internship in Solidium SDN. BHD company located in Puchong starting from 11th June 2018 to 30th August 2018. Solidium SDN. BHD. is one of the company which has a vast pool of experience in the water treatment industry that offers its customer a wide range of services ranging from chemical supplies and engineering to consultancy services. While the organization has 7 different departments such as operation department, project department, sales & marketing department, human resource department, production department, engineering and services and finance department. I was under the division of production and manufacturing that is generally focusing on the project of Electrochlorination System and Ozone Technology , projects of advanced electric electronic for the disinfection of water. I was put under the supervision of Datin Choo Mei Foon, the Assistant General Manager I.
Briefly, the Electrochlorination System is the process of producing hypochlorite by running an electric current through salt water. This is used to disinfect water and make it safe for human use such as for drinking water or even swimming pool. Meanwhile, the Ozone technology uses ozone to improve the organic qualities of water with control of taste, odour, and colour as well as for its germicidal action. Ozone is also used extensively in industry in oxidation process and for disinfection purposes.
For the first week I reported duty in the company, I have got a task which was doing some sorting and labeling piping tools in the warehouse with Mr. Choo Chin Yen ,the assistant general manager and Ms. Sharon the product specialist .The piping tools is to be assembled for the Ozone Technology project that must be delivered to and installed in Singapore.
During the second week of training , I was asked to do a Product Concentration Test of the Electro-chlorination system under the supervision of Mr. Razi, the production engineer. The water sample or the end product of the electro-chlorination process is taken in a 1000ml beaker. The collection and recording of data for the Electro-chlorination process (temperature of cell 1 &cell 2, and test sample, the pH value of test sample and etc.) is taken to calculate for the product concentration by using given formula.
Essentially, my industrial training involves many experimental procedures to test for the quality of waste water sample through the ozone technology and electro-chlorination processes. For example, after the waste water has undergone the electrical process of the ozone technology, the sample product is taken (20 ppm, 40 ppm, 60 ppm, 80 ppm and 100 ppm) to the lab to be tested for the quality such as pH value, colour, turbidity and the chemical oxygen demand ,COD. There is a technology used to check for the COD , colour and turbidity of the water sample called colorimeter and heating block as shown in figure below. Meanwhile, the pH value of the water sample is checked by using pH meter . All the manual or procedure of the technologies is made sure understood before start doing the testing.
Apart from all the experimental procedures in the lab, I was also guided on the technical steps for the inspection process of the electro-chlorination system by the production engineer and senior technician. For the electro-chlorination system, they used salt water or sodium chloride (NaCl) throughout the entire process to produce hypochlorite by running an electric current through it. The salt water is inserted into the electrolyser cells of the system. This electrolyser need to be inspected periodically to remove the salt residue that may have stuck in the cells.
It is easy to work with sophisticated machines, but not with people. The only chance that an undergraduate has to have this experience is during the industrial training period. I think I got the maximum out of the working experience. Also I learnt the way of work in an organisation, the importance of being punctual, the importance of giving maximum commitment and last but not least, the importance of team spirit. I have learnt a great deal on applying the knowledge that I have gained at the university. Learning something from books and lectures is nothing like having firsthand experiences that I able to get from my industrial training at the company Solidium Sdn. Bhd.
There was also a memorable moment which I can never forget during my training here. The event took place after Raya holiday where the company held a special dinner at the hotel with every staff in the office. All the staff including me the only internship trainee at that time, were invited to the company dinner to celebrate raya as well as celebrate the birthday of the General Manager ,Datuk Chan Kam Wai. It was truly a beautiful moment during my training period where everyone get together, ate good food , having fun and taking some pictures. It is surely a moment to be remembered. Through activity like this that has motivated me to undergo my training delightfully.
