Title: BEM Code of Professional Conduct

Presenter: Ir Juraimi Masood – PTP Gelang Patah Johor

                The presenter started his sharing session by showing a brief video titled “Malaysia’s Premier Container Port”. Then he introduced himself and gave us a little insight on his education background and his working experience. From 1992 to 1996 he worked at Sime Semeawang that currently known as Sime Darby. He also had experience working as a Resident Engineer who is in charge of the air condition system and supply for KLCC. At the end of 1997, he joined PTP.

                At PTP, he is an engineer who deals with client. He is in charge of managing stakeholder’s expectations and also managing the development plan. Some of his job scopes are development of the master plan, determining the end user requirement, engaging communities and authorities, engaging consultants. Engaging contractors and suppliers and also maintaining high quality and safe delivery. He mentioned that to work as an Electrical Engineer, one must master line drawing. They must also have the ability to read drawings.

                During his presentation, Ir Juraimi also did share on workers (engineers) expectation. According to a source from Phd study, engineers have positive view of their managers, believing that their managers can offer experience (59%), wisdom (41%) and willingness to mentor (33%). On the other hand, the employers point of view according to the Phd study, they have negative view of their employees. Employers feel that employees have unrealistic compensation expectations (51%), a poor work ethic (47%) and are easily distracted (46%).

He then shared about employer’s expectations and the industry rating. Below is the summary (Table 1).

                As a conclusion, the skills that employer’s expect from employees are just at satisfactory level. Employees need to brush up their skills to meet employer’s expectation. The presenter also shared about situational leadership and behavioral preference. He also mentioned about Herbert Hoover, the only true engineer who was the 31st President of the United States.

Next he shared some BEM code of professional conduct. Below were some of the codes mentioned:

  • To accept responsibility in making decisions consistent with the safety, health and welfare of the public and to disclose promptly factors that might endanger the public or the environment.
  • To avoid real or perceived conflicts of interest whenever possible, and to disclose them to affected parties when they do exist.
  • To be honest and realistic in stating claims or estimates based on available data.

Overall, the talk by Ir Juraimi Masood was very informative and useful to us as final year engineering undergraduates who are about to begin our career as an engineer upon graduating.
