On the 17th of April 2018, an industrial talk seminar was held for all final year students from Electrical Engineering Faculty. The purpose of this seminar was to expose student with the BEM code of professional conduct. This talk was conducted by Ir. Juraimi Masood from PTP Tanjung Pelepas. Ir. Juraimi Masood is the head of integration department in PTP (project division). He studied at the University of Hartford and worked as a trainer in Telecom. After that, he proceeded to become a project engineer in Sime Darby Engineering. As an engineer with immense experience, he emphasised on the importance of safety.
As much as RM 1.3 billion was allocated for the project involved in Port Tanjung Pelepas (PTP). The number of engineers especially civil engineers involved at the base increase as production became higher. This indirectly increased the cost because expenses were used for buying cranes in which each crane can cost up to RM 40 million. A total of 8 cranes were purchased.
Next, Ir. Juraimi Masood explained that engineers have positive outlook of their managers. They believe that their managers are capable of providing experience, wisdom and are willing to mentor. Ironically, managers on the other hand, have negative view of their employees(engineers). Managers believe that employees have unrealistic compensation expectation, poor work ethics as well as short attention span.
Lastly, Ir. Juraimi Masood advised on several aspects that we as future engineers should prepare in order to fulfil employers' expectation. This includes the abilities to function effectively, acquire and apply knowledge, communicate effectively, undertake problem identification, formulation and solution, analyse and interpret data, awareness on sustainable development and most importantly technical compensation.
To wrap up, Ir. Juraimi Masood advised fresh graduates to be willing to face new challenges and always be prepared to fail and come back stronger and better. Overall, the objective of the seminar was achieved. Students were able to learn so much from Ir. Juraimi Masood.
