Drawing Out

 

  • The skill of eliciting (encourage, provoke) group member’s comment

 

 

Reason

  • Apabila tidak bercakap, ia menjadi satu masalah. (orang yang suka mendengar)
  • Certain person yang pasif (pendiam) – To help members who have difficulties time sharing in a group
  • Drawing out perlu dilakukan sebaiknya pada AWAL sesi

 

Reason for Silent Member

  • Necessary because drawing out is not warranted for all types of silence
  • Reason silent:
  • Takut
  • Risau apa yang mereka fikirkan terhadap diri dia
  • Takut kepada negative comment, orang ketawakan dia, orang fikir dia bodoh

 

  • Thinking of processing
  • Member thinking about/processing the group interaction
  • Scanning the room
  • Pick up facial expression (tengah fikir atau membayangkan sesuatu)
  • Silent (Productive) – sebab member perlu reflect and think

 

  • Quiet by nature
  • Quite people
  • Dilahirkan dengan suka mendengar daripada bercakap

 

  • Not mentally present
  • Fikiran diorang luar dari kotak pemikiran (fikir tentang duit, keluarga, anak)
  • Fizikal ada di sesi, mentally dia berada di luar sesi

 

  • Not prepared
  • Discussion, education, and task group (sbb tu dia senyap)

 

  • Confused
  • Lack of trust
  • Ada ornag yang tak suka berada dalam group
  • Tidak ada commitment to what is happening
  • Bila kurang kepercayaan, mereka akan diam

 

Direct Method

  • Ask them if they would like to comment
  • They have any reaction to what is taking place

 

  • Drawing Out Delicately
  • Give member permission to speak
  • Call on two or three members instead of just one
  • Leader can use her eyes to see samada dia nak bercakap atau tak.
  • Leader should never ridicule / embarrass a member for not being active participant but rather should try to understand that member.
  • Too strong demand
  • Maintaining eye contact
  • Directing the group’s attention to her

 

  • Use of dyads for drawing out members
  • Used when member seem to be rather quiet and take a long time to warm up.
  • Use of round
  • Asking everyone to comment
  • Use of written
  • Members complete a writing task
  • Making list, answering some question
  • Use of eyes
  • Elicit comments (by establishing eye contact with them & holding that contact for a few seconds)
  • Use of movement
  • Asking why they positioned themselves where they did
  • Why they took the pose that they did.

Concluding Comment

  • Cutting off / Drawing Out (essential skills for good group leading)
  • Knowing how & when to draw out/cut off members improves the quality of the group
  • More involvement from members
