On 17th April 2018, I have attend an industrial talk by IR Juraimi who came all the way from PTP Gelang Patah. He gave a talk on his personal experience and his journey of being an engineer. The talk began with introduction of his education background, where he did his diploma in UTM Jalan Gurney back in 1982. After graduated, he became a trainer at Telekom Training Centre in 1984, where he gave training to the communication related engineer and technician. Within few months after became a trainer, he continued his studies in University of Hartford and continue his career journey in SIME Sembawang, followed by KTA Tenaga KLCC until he reach his current work place, PTP Gelang Patah.
The journey started in MSE where he did welding work, read cable size for his first year, then he calculated cost of ship repair (electrical part) for 5 years. When in SIME Darby, he worked as project engineer. I could say his work is related to heavy engineering which involving design, project plan, project cost (construction and bidding), construction, quality and safety. He mentioned that safety aspect is the number one aspect that needed to be take care of. "If it risky, first you should stop when needed, and second one is to take time to revive back", IR Juraimi mentioned in his talk. In Sime Darby, some of his projects get collaborated with Shell, Petronas and Esso.
The journey continued with KTA KLCC. He became a consultant at there, and also a resident engineer. For KLCC project, he is the supervisor who is responsible for air-cond plant of KLCC. As a resident engineer, his work scope is including dealing with clients, dealing with colleagues for big projects. As we all know, big project usually consists of various background colleagues which includes foreigner. He also need to deal with contractor which is quite hard to adapt.
His current work place, PTP, is consists of 100% container port, which involves a very complicated process to manage. He works as engineer that is responsible for communication with clients. He has to manage stack holders expectation together with development plan. He mentioned that, PTP can manage the capacity of 100+ million TEUS pa ( rate of delivery for container port).
Some of his big projects that he mentioned are BERTH Construction, container yard construction and completed phase 2 development of PTP. The final part of his talk is about ethics as engineer. Engineering ethics is a field of applied ethics and system of moral principles that apply to the practice of engineering. As Herbert Hoover said, "Engineer cannot deny his mistakes, if his work does not work, he is doomed". This shown that engineering field and ethics could not be separated; they must be integrated together. His last words is he wished all the best for us, and please continue to learn, explore and evolve to find next opportunities.
The talk ended at 4 o'clock. I have gained so much knowledge from this talk, thanks to IR Juraimi. That's all from me, till then, goodbye and Assalamualaikum!
