Reflection

Reflection on quizzes

As what Dr Kamarul ‘Asri did for last semester, each of his classes will not be completed without having a quizzes. From all 12 quizzes that we had with him this semester, only four of them that I able to get full mark. Hee... J

For the first and second quizzes, I only got five marks for the basis and reference condition. This is due to lack of revision while the semester breaks. When doing the quizzes, I don’t really know the correct way to search the information from the appendix behind the Felder’s book. Same goes to the third quiz. The data have to be found at the psychometric chart. From that quiz, I learnt how to read the chart and also what data can be found in the chart.

In the next quiz I just know that in the references condition, we have to list all components that react in the process and not only for the product that reaction. In Quiz 6, I loss 1 mark because I did not write the negative sign that shows the reaction is releasing the heat to the environment. This teaches me that the sign is very important in each reaction. in calculating the rate of entropy, we have to be careful because if careless, it could affect the whole calculation. While for the efficiency of the refrigerant, heat pump and also the heat engine, we have to know what the desired product is before solving the problems.

Reflection of final and overall

Firstly I want to talk about my PCP II final exam which I took this morning.  It was a very stressful exam. When the lecturer said we can start the exam I read the first question carefully. I read it for a several times but I still don’t know how to solve the problem. Because of the question did not give any temperature for the air inlet, I stuck at that question for about half an hour. It already wasting my time for solving the question and I leave until what I can solve only. I hope the mark that I obtained is not very low. I was also surprise when I take a look at question number 3. Usually in class session, we are given the balance equation of hydrocarbon and by balancing the equations, we can solve the whole question by doing the enthalpy table. But, this question is quite unique and it has to be balance in term of x and also y. This question just want to see whether we are really understand about the enthalpy table or not.

Move to the next question, it is about entropy generation. The hardest topic in PCP II. But this question is not as hard as the topic. It is assumed that air is ideal gas. So the equation of ideal gas can be used to find the entropy change. For question 5 and 6, I have the same problem in both of these questions. When calculating the value of h and s in question 5, I need to interpolate the value for 70.11kPa because in cengel don’t have the data at that state. After few time of interpolation then I can solve the question. Hopefully I had interpolated the right data. Because of too stress with interpolation in question 5, so I decided to take 0.8MPa instead of interpolating for 0.77MPa. I’m sorry Prof but I really-really run off of time…

In conclusion, my basic of PCP is not strong enough. From the conversion unit until the refrigerant in thermodynamics have to be in my mind. So I have to study from the beginning again to make sure I familiar enough with all the real process. It will be a preparation for me to become a good future chemical engineering. And for Prof Kamarul ‘Asri thanks a lot coz being a good lecturer and also father to all of us. Hopefully we can see u again in future time. Pray for our success. Laughing

Reflection on test 3

As what had been expected, my test 3 result is not very good. It is because I don’t really understand the entropy chapter. When Prof Kamarul started to teach us this chapter, he told to us just accept everything that he would teach to us. I think because of that reason I cannot absorb it very well..huhu..

But the test also includes second law of thermodynamics chapter. For first question I wrongly understood the data given in that question. When I read again the question I realise that it gives the data for QL not QH. Just for that reason I loss about 18 marks. Next problem is question no 3 because it related to entropy chapter. As I told before, I do not understand the whole thing in this chapter. So it become a nightmare for me to answer this question.

For the last question, I was really tricky question. In my opinion, the entropy for the pressure at 20 bar and 15 bar is not the same due to the existing of throttling valve and changes of pressure. But when comparing with the full marks answer, it has the same value of s. This question need a deep understanding of this topics.

Reflection for test 2

From the overall result of my test 2, I found that I don’t have big problem in solving the question for the energy balance on reactive process chapter. Basically, in this chapter we have to solve the heat of reaction by using several methods. For question 1, I did not get full marks because I get confuse whether I have to put negative sign for the heat of vaporization of water. Because of that mistake, I did not get the right answer for my heat of reaction and also the heat that being release in that process. These teach me to follow the hypothetical path that had been drawn carefully. Otherwise I will loss the marks easily for my final exam. For determining the enthalpy change by using Hess law is not really a problem. I have to know what the coefficient needed for each of the reaction given to obtain the final reaction that represent in the question.

While for the third question, the main thing that has be solve first is the mass balance for the involved. The number of mole that involved for each component can be obtained easily by referring to its balance chemical equation. The heat of reaction can calculate by using heat of formation method. Lastly, due to the carelessness in solving the mass balance, three marks had been deducted for my last question. Luckily, it is not affect my other calculation in finding the enthalpy change at each of the component involved. I was very satisfied with my result of my test 2 because the result of test 1 is quite bad. Hopefully my third test will not disappoint me.. Sealed

test for pcp 2

E-Portfolio Principle of Chemical Process (II) for test 1 Hanis Syairah Sazali

Due to the bad results of PCP (II) in test 1, we are required to do some reflection about all questions in the test…huhu.. Smile so that we are learnt from our mistakes. For the test 1, the marks that I obtain not reaching half of 100%.  In general, I think the real reason that I cannot gain the higher marks because of the incomplete CO1 which is the basis is not completed with the reference condition of the compounds involved. Secondly, the basic of mass balance is not strong enough to solve the problems.

For question 1, it is not difficult for me to understand the question because the question quite straight to the point. But I have loss marks in solving the (a) part. I cannot really figure out the right words to explain about the hypothetical path.

For question two, I have a problem to search for the temperature of the water outlet from the heat exchanger. Thus, all of the question cannot be solved. The temperature can be gain in appendix B7 for the temperature of 5 bar. Then, by using all of the component involved, construct the enthalpy table to calculate the mass of steam.

For question 3, I only get the marks for the basis. I have big problem in solving the mass balance. For this question, I should use the psychometric chart to obtain value for the mass dry air. In this question, the key words is adiabatic which mean Q=0. Then solve by using formula QWater = -QDA.

Same for the last question, I only get marks for the basis for question 4. To solve the question, I suppose to calculate the value of P by using dry cereal balance. Then find the mass of water and humidity. Mass dry air is equal to mass water divided by humidity. Volume Ai = Volume MDA.

The most important things that will help me to score in next test is the basis, reference state and the mass balanced. I have to master it first to make my life getting easier in solving a problem. Wink

it all about PCP I ^_^

Before entering the Principle of Chemical Process (PCP) class, I always thought that this subject is not very tough subject. It is because when I was in semester 1, we are also learned the basic conversion to use in this subject. Plus, our lecturer is not stressed to us about it. But when entering first class of Prof. Kamarul ‘Asri bin Ibrahim, I shock because it totally different with what I am expected. In his first class, he brief to us about all the syllabus that will be in this PCP I. from that I know that this subject is very hard and also it a must that all of Chemical Engineering student to pass this subject because it is a pre-requisites to PCP II that will be taken in the next semester. In his first class also, he did do some revision about the unit conversion that we had learned in first semester. Most of us had already forgotten how to convert it. But with his help, we’re getting better in the conversion unit. He said that to be a well future engineer, we have familiar with the unit conversion because in daily life we will not always get what we expect and not all of the engineer outside there will be used the same unit with us.

In the 2nd week, we are being introduced with quizzes. We will be test in the very early of the class. In the beginning, I was felt very nervous to answer the quiz question. But I was getting more comfortable with it day by day. It actually teaches me to be more prepared in all of his classes and it makes me study about the chapter that he will test us. Actually it was very fun. From the quizzes also, I learned that basis is the most important thing that we have to know. By knowing the basis of certain process, we can scale up and also scale down the entire process. It is very useful in real life because not all of the time we are needed to produce very small amount of product and vice versa. From his quizzes also I know that every single thing have their own unit except for ratio of same element. Before this I always thought that if we are dividing the mass of certain element with the total mixture of two element, there will be no unit because both of it is in kg. But, in fact it have unit because the element is not the same and it could not cancel each other.

For 3rd and 4th week, I had learned about the single unit and multiple processes. There’s a lot of process that happen around us but we are not realize about it. We are only saw what is happen in the factory. Prof. Kamarul relating all of the process to what had happen in the surrounding to make us understand more about it. But before solving the problem, I have to know what are the process take place, how many input and output and also the quantitative and the qualitative value for the process. The next week, we had learned about purging, recycle and also bypass in the multiple process. By doing this to the process, we can save cost for the whole process and also increase the product formed. Great future chemical engineer should know how to minimize the cost for a process with a bigger amount of product that will be produce by the system.

In week 6 to week 8, we had been introduced to material balances on reactive process. In this chapter, we are dealing with the chemical reaction equation. In every equation we have to balance the equation so that we know the stoichiometry for each element. From that we will know which reactant will be the excess and also limiting reactant. There are 4 concepts that had been stress by Prof. Kamarul which is fractional conversion, fractional excess, yield and also selectivity that should be know in these topics. We also need to differentiate between the dry basis and also wet basis in the reaction. Water content in the reaction will give the difference between the two basis. When water content is ignore in the reaction, it will be the dry basis.

In the following week, I have learned about the single phase system. This chapterfocus on the ideal gas, Standard Temperature and Pressure (STP), and also non ideal gas. In the material balance, only a basis is needed to solve a problem. But in this chapter, references condition on initial state also play a role in solving a question. This is very-very tricky chapter. It is because the information given in a question is not enough by only looking at the question. So we have to know how to search the extra information by searching at the appendix B in Elementary Principle of Chemical Process to obtain the critical pressure and also temperature. Using the information we can know the compressibility factor and it will show that our gas is an ideal gas or not. So, the answer is not the main thing in this courses but the part of the solution play the most important role to having the critical thinking mind.

For 10th and 11th week, we are focussing to the multi phase system. In this chapter, we need to apply the Raoult’s Law for a single condensable species. While for the Gas-Liquid system we have to apply Raoult’s Law and also Henry’s Law. In the both laws, it contain mole fraction for vapour and also liquid. In this chapter also, we are trying to find the dew point of the solution when it is being cooled and also the bubble point when it is being heated. And in the last two weeks we had been taught about the energy balanced for open and also closed system. There are three type of energy involved in the both system is the kinetic energy, potential energy, and internal energy or enthalpy. But for me, this chapter is a quite tough chapter because it needs a deep understanding about the previous chapter. So to understand more I think I should understand this subject from the beginning.

As a closure, this subject maybe a tough subject but if we giving some time to it like Prof Kamarul always said we need to spend 3 hours more for each hours inside the class to have a better understanding. Understand is better than memorizing. Furthermore, the part of the solution is more important than the final answer. To Prof Kamarul ‘Asri  thank you for making me enjoy to study this PCP I. I hope that I will see you also in my PCP II. Laughing
