AHMAD FIKRY BIN NORDIN's Reflection
'Challenges of Employment in Engineering'
On 16th of April 2019, a talk was given by Ir. Juraimi Masood. The things that he want to talk is regarding the journey, electrical, expectation, situational behavior and ethics. For Mr. Juraimi journey as an engineer, he was from telecommunication major at first but changed his course to electrical power. He first started as a management trainee from 1986 to 1991. On 1992 to 1996, he worked at SIME in heavy at SIME in heavy engineering department. Then he wnet to worked at KTA Tenaga as a counsultant on completing KLCC. Then at PTP Tanjung Pelepas, he manage stakeholder's expectation and the development plan.
The challenges on the working environment at PTP, is the engineer need to know the electrical design. For example, the 132kV Single Line Diagram. Plus, the engineer also need to focus on the Green and Cost Saving Initiative which is very challenging especially on operating a heavy machinery that is high cost and needed gas burning to operate.

These are the employee's expectation on their engineers:-
- Having in depth technical competence in a specific engineering discipline.
- Ability to function effectively in a group as leader or manager as well as an effective team member.
- The ability to acquire and apply knowledge of engineering fundamentals.
- Ability to communicate effectively to colleagues and community at large.
- Ability to undertake problem identification, formulation and solution.
- Having social awareness on sustainable.
- Ability to utilize a systems approach.
- Ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data.
During the talks, Mr. Juraimi gave the guidelines for fresh engineers like us:-
- Register to National Society of Professional Engineer (NSPE).
- Keeping the safety, health, and welfare of the public.
- Doing services only in areas of their specific discipline.
- Act for each employer or client as faithful agents.
- Register Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (IEEE) so able to become a professional engineer in the future.
- To accept responsibility in decision for the safety, health and welfare of the public and to disclose promptly promptly factors that might endanger the public or the environment.
- Honest in stating claims in data.
So, the fresh graduates was told to be ready to face the challenges and when failed, must always build up back from it.
