MAISARAH BINTI MOHD ZAKI's Reflection

Work accomplished during training at Ranhill SAJ Segamat

Throughout the internship, there were many activities I able to participate. The friendly staff of Ranhill SAJ make it possible for me to learn and experience new things.

The routine that I did was water quality test in the water treatment plant (WTP) laboratory. The lab equipped with the apparatus and chemicals are used to do the water quality test. The water quality test include testing for pH, turbidity, color, aluminum, iron, ammonia, manganese, fluoride and residual chlorine. This test is important to monitor the water quality so thatit always under the standard of Ranhill SAJ and KKM.

Other than that, I also participate in cleaning the filtration tank and sedimentation tank. This cleaning activities usually been done for twice in a month. During the cleaning process, the operator need to wear Tyveks suit, to ensure the safety during working.

Moreover, there also an internal and external audit for production department. I able to joined the internal audit from headquarters Ranhill SAJ. The audit consist of checking the quality, management and employee capabilities and skills.

For external audit, the audit is for Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) by SIRIM. The audit is to evaluate on safety of the food system which mainly the process treatment.

Last but not least, I also participate in meetings with the contractor and also help the the clerk in filing and documentation work. From all these activities, I able to develop my soft skills and hard skills which useful for my career in future.

A Golden Opportunity

Yes, it is a golden opportunity... never I imagine of visiting every water treatment plant in Segamat, Johor. Thanks to Ranhill SAJ Segamat gave me a chance to have site visit in every water treatment plant. The water treatment plant located at 8 different places which are WTP Kampung Tengah1, WTP Kampung Tengah2, WTP Air Panas A, WTP Air Panas C, WTP Jementah, WTP Bukit Hampar, WTP Palong Timur, WTP Pemanis and one dam which is Juaseh dam.

Below I attached few pictures of every water treatment plant that I have visited. From every site visit I gain new experience and knowledge about water treatment. Some water treatment have slightly different treatment due to its raw water source. Moreover overall the water treatment plant is conventional type in which the process flow can be describe as follows;PF1.png

At WTP Pemanis I able to learn the backwashing process of filtration tank. Firstly, the water was allowed to flow to the scour channel. Then the air scour inlet is fully opened. The blower will start and run about 5 minutes. The air that is blown into the filter will assist in breaking up the mud ball that might exist into suspension particles. The test was carried to observe the uniform pattern of air blown to the filter tank.

Next, at WTP Air Panas C, I able to observe the larger scale of chemical mixing tank which also by a special program. The program called SCADA system, from this system the operator can easily monitor the amount of chemicals in the mixing tank of every chemicals and also determine whether the equipment such as pumps at water treatment plant functioning well or not.

Moreover, at WTP Air Panas C there were special treatment for sludge which using the sludge lagoon. The lagoon function to collect the sludge before disposal.

Other sludge treatment include Geotube. This sludge treatment I observe at WTP Palong Timur. The sludge will be processed with polymer and kept in Geotube that can be filled up to 1m height.

To end, this so far my favorite site visit. I went to Juaseh Dam, Juaseh Dam located about 10 km from Labis and 42 km from Segamat town. The dam is about 220 m length and 30 m height. The rain catchment area is 29 km2.

Water Treatment Plant Kampung Tengah 2

                                                         .IMG_0950.JPG

On 22 July, I followed the supervisor to WTP Kampung Tengah 2. The operators and technician were cleaning  the sedimentation tank and filtration tank. I able to see the cleaning process and discover different type of aerator and fluoride scrubber used in the water treatment plant.

  1. Water Treatment Plant Kampung Tengah 1

Today, I had a site visit of water treatment plant in Kampung Tengah 1.  At Kampung Tengah 1 the water treatment plant is conventional type. The raw water intake is located at Sungai Segamat and 13130  required to accommodate water supply to the residents of Segamat district. Below are few pictures on Water Treatment Plant in Kampung Tengah 1.

AMINE GAS TREATING UNIT PROCESS

Amine gas treating, also known as gas sweetening and acid gas removal, refers to a group of processes that use aqueous solutions of various alkylamines which commonly referred to simply as amines, to remove hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and also carbon dioxide (CO2) from gases.

It is a common unit process used in refineries, and is also used in petrochemical plants, natural gas processing plants and other industries. Processes within oil refineries or chemical processing plants that remove hydrogen sulfide are referred to as "sweetening" processes because the odor of the processed products is improved by the absence of hydrogen sulfide.

Thermodynamics Group Presentation

This week on Friday 1st of June my friends and I had done our thermodynamics presentation which had been assign by our lecturers Prof Masa Goto and Dr. Nabilah. Our task is about Renewable Energy Resources, and we decide to discuss about Solar Energy –Solar panel. Basically, solar panel are used as a converter to generate electricity from the sun.

The problem statement are:

  • How does solar panel benefits people and environment
  • What are the disadvantages in using solar panel
  • Does solar panel works at night

From this assignment , I manage to obtain new knowledge from this topic. There are many develop country has practice in using solar energy, however Malaysia still in the beginning state on the practices. Solar panel do have its own disadvantages such as expensive and requires some space, but we cannot denied it is useful as it is environmental friendly. Moreover, I got to know the details how solar panel is functioning and how it works at night. Indeed, it is interesting knowledge to have.

Next, from this assignment I manage to learn how to communicate and cooperate in a group. I am so lucky to have group members that are giving full commitment when doing this task. I would like to take this opportunity  to thanks Iman ,Iskar , Yashu  and Amir for being great groupmates.

I have also attach our presentation slide. So do check them.. Thank You.
