MUHAMAD ALIFF BIN ZAHARIM's Reflection

Industrial Training 2019 @ MRCSB, Melaka

I already had finished my industrial training (internship) for 3 months at Malaysian Refining Company Sdn Bhd (MRCSB) located at Sungai Udang, Melaka. The duration for my internship is from 10th June 2019 to 30th August 2019.

MRCSB is the largest refinery in Malaysia and was known to be the best refinery in Asia Pacific. Before this, MRCSB was known as Petronas Penapisan Melaka (PPM) before they decided to change the company's name to MRCSB. MRCSB have 6 departments  such as Production, Engineering, Technology, Human Resources, HSSE, Operational Excellent (OEX). And I was assigned to Engineering Department. Engineering Department are divided into 5 units such as Electrical, Mechanical, Instrument, Turnaround and Reliability Management Unit and MMU. While mechanical also is divided into 2 units which is Rotating and Static. And I was assigned/attached into Mechanical (Rotating) Unit. The Mechanical (Rotating) unit is led by Principal Engineer, Mr Farid bin Yahya, I was supervised throughout the training by my supervisor which is a Rotating Engineer, Mr Mohd Hilmihusaini bin Razif.

Basically, my training involves with all rotating equipment such as pump, compressor, blower and turbine. In Mechanical (Rotating) Department, there are Central Repair Group (CRG) and Condition Base Monitoring (CBM). Central in CRG means that it covers the whole MRCSB if there are any problem occurs with rotating equipment. They will assemble and dissemble the equipment, overhaul, install at site, alignment check and soft foot. While CBM usually will perform test run, daily inspection and over speed trip test. So my supervisor assigned me to follow these two, CRG and CBM for me to know the rotating equipment concept and to let me exposed to all parts/components in rotating equipment.

Besides that, I learnt many things when I worked with CBM. I learnt how to check vibration at rotating equipment. I also learnt how to do visual inspection for rotating equipment which are inspect if there are any leak that can see through naked eyes and check the lube oil colour (condition). So in doing this, I learnt many things about mechanical concept, For example, to check vibration at equipment, why we need to check the vibration at bearing not at mechanical seal or any other part. I  also learnt the functions for all parts/components in rotating equipment (pump, compressor, turbine, blower). In addition, i also did hands-on work. I joined a team in CRG to dissemble/dismantle or assemble equipment. For example, major overhaul for compressor and turbine, we need to dissemble to check the condition and assemble again to install the equipment.

For the lecturer visit, Dr Mohd Azizi b Abdul Rahman from Electronic System Engineering Department, MJIIT-UTM visited me during my internship in MRCSB. So I present to him about company background and my job scope. Then I assisted him to take a look around workshop and warehouse and around MRCSB except process area (site).

Last but not least, the internship give opportunity for me to apply the theory learned in class while completing the task given by engineers. The training program was not only beneficial for me in term of technical or academic base but I also had developed various skills. From the training program of three months duration, I had developed skills in work ethics, communication and management skills. I am totally in love with the company's environment. I recommend for the other students to pursue their internship in MRCSB.
