Participating as a volunteer at the 13th UTM University Presidents Forum (UPF), held from 8th to 10th August 2023 at KSL Hotel & Resort in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, and organized by UTM International, was a highly rewarding experience. As a volunteer, I had the opportunity to contribute to a major international event attended by 25 university presidents and 115 representatives from 11 countries.
One of the key takeaways from this experience was understanding the level of preparation and teamwork required to ensure smooth operations. My role involved assisting with event logistics, coordinating between different teams, and interacting with international delegates. This taught me valuable lessons in time management, problem-solving, and communication, especially when dealing with a diverse audience.
Beyond the logistical skills, the forum provided a rare opportunity to network with prominent academicians and university leaders. I gained insights into global academic trends and the importance of international collaboration. Witnessing discussions on critical issues in higher education broadened my understanding of how universities can tackle global challenges and innovate in research and learning.
For others, attending or volunteering at such events offers immense learning potential. It's a chance to witness high-level discussions on academic leadership, explore different perspectives on education, and build professional connections that can influence future career paths. Additionally, being involved in organizing an event of this scale boosts confidence and enhances one's ability to work under pressure while contributing to a meaningful cause.
Overall, the 13th UTM-UPF was a stepping stone in both personal and professional development, providing me with skills, knowledge, and a broader network to support my future endeavors.
